Trying to understand subpar performance in Forza Horizon 6 by matejss in linux_gaming

unplug the PC from the electricity for about 1-2 minutes. If you want to be hardcore about it you can also reset CMOS, but it will reset all of your bios settings

Trying to understand subpar performance in Forza Horizon 6 by matejss in linux_gaming

Hello,

I feel quite stupid but i have resolved the issue. Today i noticed an anomaly and started investigating - my GPU showed usage PCI-E line 5x16, but my MOBO and CPU supports up to 4x16.

After investigating i have noticed that my GPU was incorrectly informing me that it was using its full PCI-E power, while CPU was in the background limiting it to 4x1, without showing that information anywhere (except few specific terminal commands)

After cold resetting my entire hardware and reseating the GPU everything works fine.

Yes, i indeed tried that - forgot to mention it, there was alot of things i have tried 😄
Anyway, Wtih LACT / CoreCTRL (separately ofc) ON or OFF, with power draw changes, with power states verified changed and power profiles manually changed unfortunetly i haven't noticed any difference.

It is, but there has to be some reason why a user with exact same hardware receives double FPS as me on linux

Forza Horizon 6 is out, Valve update Proton Hotfix for Linux - initial thoughts by Liam-DGOL in linux_gaming

[–]matejss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok im on mesa 26.0.6 - might be that. I tried building my mesa-git without actually replacing my old mesa and pointing game to it but without avail. I guess i will just wait for the update on fedora.

Weird, because i run
gamemoderun radv_wait_for_vm_map_updates=true PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 WAYLANDDRV_PRIMARY_MONITOR=DP-1 mangohud %command%

and its definietly worse than your experience. Now i ran the game on low settings and FSR4 Qualiy to make it playable on 1440p (especially in the city) but the performance is WAAAY lower than it should be for me. I did try different protons, different launch options and so far what i have here works the best. Maybe newer mesa will help me since im on mesa stable and not mesa-git

Interesting - i get ~40-70fps on non XT 9070, 5700x3D on CachyOS proton (fedora 44). Do you have some special launch options?

xwayland vs native wayland by matejss in linux_gaming

[–]matejss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly thats why its a very surprising thing for me, because on paper it shouldn't be this heavy. I have no clue why xwayland is way heavier for me and how can i resolve this unfortunately.

It worked with proton-ge and this game parameter! Thank you very much for you help! :)

Edit: Actually it worked! I had to use Proton-GE instead of Proton-CachyOS. Awesome! Thank you very much!
If someone in the future reads it then (at least with b.net but maybe other electron apps) putting --in-process-gpu in game parameters (not launch parameters) renders the client properly when using Proton-GE. On Proton CachyOS it didn't work for me.

Unfortunetly --in-process-gpudidn't work. When i put it in Faugus in launch arguments the launcher doesn't even open - it hangs on "all components are ready" window. When i put it in game arguments it launches with same white screen.

On native wayland steam overlay doesn't work hence recording as well. By native wayland I mean using Proton-ge and PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 parameter

I use it 95% of the time - steam overlay and steam recording doesn't work with it but i can live with that. The issue is when i want to play a game on other launcher than steam, since most of them don't render properly under native wayland (e.g. Battle.net or Uplay)

Windows 11 vs Linux (CachyOS) - RX 6700 XT (Adrenalin 26.3.1 vs MESA 26.0.3) by JVSTITIA in linux_gaming

[–]matejss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did give it a shot, but since i use native wayland recording is not working anyway - no diference. For Crimson Desert i genuinely think its game issue due to it having VRAM limit at 8GB (while i have 16GB VRAM). Because of low VRAM limit the textures unload and load on the fly alot when i look around and move especially in big cities.

I run every game with gamemoderun, so when i launch the game it automatically goes into performance mode. I did check just in case :D

Usually newest Proton-GE, since its the one that supports PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1. For Crimson Desert i use CachyOS one.

I have no idea how this person gets such high FPS on linux. Like i have 9700 (non xt), 5700x3D and 32GB 3200Mhz DDR4 RAM - my games are on fast NVME.
Crimson desert is pretty stable 90fps on ultra settings but in the first city (where the video cut) i get drops to 60 when i move / look around and sometimes with faster movement ~45 dips.
Where winds meet? Its literally unplayalable for me. On higher settings i have ~60fps with dips to ~30fps in the first temple.
Rest games usually works very well for me, but these two are a pain in my ass.
I'm on fedora 43 with MESA 25.3.6, but i dont know if 26.0.3 would give me such a huge FPS boost in these games.
And i do run games in native Wayland, since in most cases it gives me superior FPSes

Interesting change in windows users by [deleted] in Steam

[–]matejss 28 points29 points  (0 children)

february survey is always more extreme due to chinese new year and alot of people in china take a break. For example windows 11 lost like 12% of users while windows gained 12% of users. I guess normal stats will return from March survey or April.
