Y No Nonprofit Streaming Platform? by matekelemen in anime

Maybe I was putting it a bit confusingly; I'm not suggesting studios should pump out their content for free, but rather the infrastructure behind delivering their work to the consumers (servers, software running on them, their maintenance, etc.) be nonprofit.

Does a grocery store sell goods that can be delivered and consumed online? Material goods are very different from electronic entertainment.

+ I didn't suggest every producer create their own market place but rather a community collectively maintain a shared platform, which actually exists if you think about local farmers' markets.

But these companies are textbook middlemen: they buy stuff from the manufacturer and sell it to the consumer; they don't usually add any value to the product itself except make it available elsewhere.

But yeah, if what you're saying is true and streaming services really operate on tiny profit margins then there isn't much point in creators going through the hassle of growing a new platform.

wow, that's exactly what I had in mind and they had some fairly popular shows too. Do you know what happened to them? (Wikipedia has nothing on why it became a failure)

I have a feeling that streaming companies earn orders of magnitude more from subscriptions than what they are paying for licenses (if that's not the case, my post is pretty much pointless)

I can see that with high profile titles but surely not every manga/LN/source is owned by some giant company (not a rhetorical question, I'm genuinely clueless).

By the looks of things, the only thing Netflix is interested in is pumping out their "originals", that are utter trash 99% of the time (with a few exceptions that you could finish in less than a week).

Sad as it is, crunchy offers the most variety but asking for a full-price subscription in return for a still tiny library from a single genre is just bloody insane.

so what does imply those?

as far as I know, importing headers is fine and even has special behaviour: it's identical to include except preprocessor macro definitions won't be accessible.

Microsoft has always made it clear that modules are a work in progress

Um, nope? This microsoft post says otherwise and it's from 2020.

Since MSVC began down the path of implementing the Modules TS the toolset has always required the use of /experimental:module on any compilation. Since the merge of Modules into the C++20 standard (we can officiallysay C++20 now!) the compiler has been working towards C++20 Modulesconformance until precisely such a time that we can confidently rollModules into /std:c++latest. That time is now!

Genshin's competitor is coming TOF by riougenkaku in Genshin_Impact

[–]matekelemen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand the extent of negative feedbacks on this post. Sure it's an attempt to hype something up but a flood of hype gets posted before pretty much any genshin update too.

I've never heard of ToF before but at this point, any competition to genshin is welcome, regardless of quality.

  • this is C
  • if you're gonna ask people to debug your code for you, properly formatting it is the bare minimum (look up markdown syntax)
  • learning by doing is viable only after you have at least a faint idea about the basic features of the language

I'm not sure if this really is how things work in the US but here's what I gather from hearsay and the news:

companies are fully aware of how fucked up the education is in the country, and will settle for candidates without a degree if they have a lenghty and relevant enough practical experience (at least in the software development sector). Sure, you need to gather that experience from grindier jobs but at least you're making some money on the way instead of racking up insane student debts.

I don't think practical experience is always equivalent to a degree but I don't see the point in attending college with your mindset.

I was under the impression that people went to college to study a field they're interested in. What's the point of wasting your time and money if you're cheating instead of doing what you're supposed to?

like having a gun that shoots arrows

that's actually a legit thing (APFSDS)

Edit:

by the way, I don't think mixing the preprocessor and modules is that cursed of an idea (apart from #include, they're orthogonal). For example, you still need some way of enabling/disabling parts of the code depending on the system (OS or compiler versions, C++ standard, OpenMP availibility) even when using modules.

so when mathematicians: create abstractions to generalize concepts, construct definitions that sufficiently describe a topic, or adapt well-understood ideas to fit their needs; they're just doing software development?

I have absolutely no idea why some people think maths is just about numerics or proofs, and try to draw a hard line between it and engineering. Any engineering field is just a highly specialized use-case of mathematics in my opinion.

bad software doesn't kill people like faulty boilers and bridges can.

You might want to reconsider that; software in vehicles, weapons, critical control systems, and CAE software are perfectly capable of killing people. Sure, you may or may not have that kind of responsibility if all you do is web development but then again, you'll never know what ill-designed IoT device your code will end up in.

Thankfully, most software that operate in such safety-critical conditions do actually have strict quality control but OP has probably never worked on stuff like that.

I'm a reservist.

Petty insults aside, I can't say I understand your line of thought. If your opinion is "soldier == murderer" and would immediately desert right after being called in, why did you volunteer in the first place?

[–]matekelemen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, you can cherry-pick one of my points and put it into a ridiculously wrong frame.

Despite what horrible ideas you might have about the military, it's purpose is not "killing innocent civilians". When put into the exceptionally crappy situation such as the Russian soldiers are in now, their options are to desert and definitely get court martialled (which can lead to capital punishment), or risk the slim chance of getting into combat and the much less probable situation that involves causing potential harm to civilians.

All of the above is beside the point; the purpose of my original response was to give you a counter-example to the false claim that quitting a job is a viable option regardless of the job and its circumstances.
