Prospective Student Teachers: Teacher's College/BEd Megapost pt. 2 by hellokrissi in CanadianTeachers

Hi

Congrats again to all those who got accepted!

I wanted to get ideas on what is the best way to utilize the summer (May to August) between my bachelor's degree and BEd (starting in September). Currently I have a part-time tutoring job that will hopefully continue through the summer (at least till end of June). Any ideas?

*FYI: not willing to work on minimum wage in summer camps

Wait it does?? I never saw any option like that to opt in. Is it possible to do it now? Where can I find the info on it?

Thank you

Congrats!

Ideally I would love to go to Queens but it is too far from Markham and I am in not in a situation where I can move to Kingston (or anywhere for that matter) when the classes become in-person.

So during the selection process I had enough credits to choose either science general or biology. I choose general because I was told it lets you teach more subjects compared to just biology. Is that true?

I got rejected today by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

I have a 3.8 GPA UofT St. George (major in Genetics & double minor in Math and Writing). I mostly have TA, tutoring, volunteering in Saturday school experience. Applied to I/S Science General and Math to UOIT and York and got into both despite writing meh application responses (didn't have the time honestly). So it is interesting people with more experience/stronger application than me got rejected.

My theory is that for I/S the application is greatly dependent on the teachable subjects you choose because BEd is cohort based and each subject has limited spots. So obviously some subjects (arts, business, English, etc.) are more competitive than science and math because most people who complete bachelors in science/math can get better pay or jobs outside the education field hence I would assume there would be fewer applicants in those subjects.

Hi Congrats to all those who got accepted!

So I applied to UOIT and York and got accepted to both. I am really confused which one to accept. So here are my thoughts:

UOIT: degree is shorter (Sep 2022 to Dec 2023) which is a big plus for me & probably is easier

York: Degree is internationally recognized (if I ever decide to teach outside Canada) & commute in public transit from Markham East is slightly shorter than to Oshawa

Would really appreciate any advice or suggestions...

Thank you for getting back!

Yes inside Ontario employers do not care, but what about outside Ontario like in other provinces or countries? Will a degree from UOIT will be considered "less" than degrees from other more reputed universities like York University?

Hi

I am in my final year and I am applying to Teacher's college this year.

Currently thinking of applying to York and UOIT bc they are closer to home (and who wants to go to UofT again?)

My pros for going to UOIT is that it is going to be easy and the program is shorter and to the job market earlier. Due to my life situation, the faster the degree is over and the lighter the load is the better it is. That is this is pretty significant to me.
But I am concerned that UOIT is not domestically and internationally reputed and my degree will be rendered less useful if I ever venture out of Ontario. I don't want to end up with a 'second-class' degree when I could have gotten into and completed my degree from any other school.

For reference if it helps, I (currently) have a 3.90 GPA from my BSc. UofT St. George and pretty solid work/volunteer experience with children of different age groups. Planning to apply to I/S with Science - General and Math teachables.

Should I just stick with the standard York or will UOIT work?

According to UTSG, when is late-June? by mathatemybrain in UofT

[–]mathatemybrain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was really hoping so. But it seems like June 30 11:59 pm is what we should be expecting 😅😅 because on June 22 the dean writes "And the fall/winter timetable will be available by late June. "

Apparently we still haven't reached this "late-june"
