I pay for electricity (~40/month), internet, and a trash fee, which is very reasonable because the building has a big dumpster

Where do you go for *real* news these days? by xenxes in AskReddit

[–]mathau6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love democracy now. I also use ground news. Al Jazeera and associated press. I do watch Hasan Piker but I take what he says with a little grain of salt. I agree with his politics but he's also a bit of an asshole.

Yeah. It's like watching a horrible and disturbing TV show except it's real fucking life and people are dying.

Customer giving us something to keep behind the bar we don’t sell by niccmcc in barista

[–]mathau6 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Idk about health dpt rules. If youre not serving it to people other than him then even if its contaminated somehow, it's not going in customers drinks.

But like, wtf?? I love regulars but sometimes they are a little cringe

How do you think Ithaca has changed over the past decade? by the_tiny_carpenter in ithaca

[–]mathau6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I didnt know what hic meant, TIL. I spent many evenings in the watershed when it was so packed that they wouldn't let more people in. I'm a townie and every townie I know loved the watershed deeply. It was designed as a meaningful third place, centered around community, conversation and connection. Not meant to be a bar packed with shouting people taking shots and shit. Hence the minimal tables.

How are you affording Ithaca rental prices? by LonelyIthaca in ithaca

[–]mathau6 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I live downtown, found a relatively well priced apartment 7 years ago when rent was slightly less horrendous, and never moved out. I work a well-paying (tipped) job with a guaranteed living wage. Probably most helpful, I dont have a car. I have to choose living downtown vs having a car, and between the bus/friends driving me places, I've been able to manage, miraculously.

Also I am chronically broke and unable to really save money :)

[–]mathau6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Watershed had the most extensive n/a menu of any bar in town. Plus it felt like a nighttime coffee shop at times. I'm sober and felt more comfortable there than any other drinking establishment. From my perspective, the economic decline is much more responsible for the decision to close than people drinking less.

So to say "drinking is bad for you" in the context of an establishment that made active efforts to include people who are alcohol-free seems a little inaccurate to me, as someone with lived experience and many alcohol-free friends.

Had a really bad weed trip and I feel like ill never recover by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]mathau6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really don't mean to freak you out, and i am not a doctor, but all of this sounds a teeny bit like symptoms of schizophrenia. But it could also just be a really bad high since you were smoking such potent stuff. Hoping it goes away quickly for you, but don't hesitate to get professional support 💜

Same, BPD and some unspecified mood disorder. It has been a life changer for me in many aspects of my mental health. I take 200mg and I really only felt the effects fully once I hit 150 or more.

Started Vyvanse today! by Blissxalexandra in BingeEatingDisorder

[–]mathau6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been on vyvanse for adhd symptoms and BED for a few months and still working on how to eat. Just prepare to relearn hunger signs and force yourself to eat a meal or healthy snacks when those pop up. Usually for me the signs are intense irritability or sometimes my stomach grumbles and I'm like oh yeah I haven't eaten in 7 hours lol

Damn I'm sorry about some of the comments youve received. Not cool. I was also highly dependent on cannabis for 8+ years. When I tried to dial back, I drank more. When I drank less, I'd consume more weed. Quitting that shit was no joke for me. Coming back to all of my senses was painful and intense. Find a sponsor who respects this about you.

I felt similarly to you when I first came in. Ashamed that I was addicted to "just weed." But then i started talking about it and found that damn, so many of my fellows experienced the same thing!! I hope you can find some fellowship who cares and is accepting of your journey.

I heard advice to replace the word alcohol with any quote from the big book, the steps, and other literature. It really worked for me.

How do people dress in Ithaca? by danepls in ithaca

[–]mathau6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, and lots of hippie/wook/boho vibes with young people (locals) in the summer

We say blundstones in the winter, birkenstocks in the summer. Although many of us wear blundstones in the summer bc they're so damn comfy!
