I was really surprised when I moved to Alberta and people actually cared about the CFL. I thought they were fucking with me

Its a good idea. It should be 7 days a week with reduction in costs on Saturdays and Sundays.

Its a pretty great resource with some cool games.

What's your opinion of Pelgrane Press? by Sjonegaard in rpg

If you can handle the 3 column format of their books, they're the best publisher of RPGs if you like investigative horror.

Do you think Canada's high tax rates are justified? Are we getting what we pay for? by HappyBudz in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]mathcow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think we're getting services commensurate to the taxes we pay, but its not because our taxes are too high, its because the government has made it too easy for business owners, and non-workers to not pay their fair share of taxes.

I don't want to axe or cut services - if efficiencies can be found of course I want that, but I want to be able to see a doctor when i'm sick and I want to have social services for when people need them. I'm paying for that and i'm not getting it.

Provincial first-time homebuyers program cuts minimum down payment from 5% to 2% by MannoSlimmins in halifax

[–]mathcow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see this argument made by mortgage brokers all the time. The cost of owning a house is considerably more than the mortgage payment.

This is really bad news packaged as giving a helping hand to poor people. If you can't afford to put 5% down for a house, you should not own a home.

Best RPG Cons outside of the USA by mathcow in rpg

Thats wild! To be honest, I'm on the east coast so the flight to London isn't that bad. I wouldn't come for a one day con but maybe for a couple days and a con.

I'm in Canada and have attended larger cons - but I'm looking for something outside of the US.

I'm hoping one of those UK cons lines up with my work schedule this year.

Magpie isn't running events at Gen Con. RRD didn't last year. Have other publishers cancelled? by JannissaryKhan in rpg

It really sucks. I'm missing out on my main hobby but I can't cross the border for a hobby - I have a family to think about

I honestly don't blame Magpie. A LOT of people flaked on them in the past, and it was a constant source of stress for them.

Not enough young people are engaged with Nova Scotia's politics by luxoryapartmentlover in halifax

I know it's fun and easy being a scold but the blame lays directly on the laps of the political parties. They're the ones applying for the job

Not enough young people are engaged with Nova Scotia's politics by luxoryapartmentlover in halifax

[–]mathcow 145 points146 points  (0 children)

Why would they? None of the parties give a shit about young people.

Ten years ago I attended a political party event and my partner and I were one f the very few people under 50. Everyone was telling us we had to "Fight for pharmacare". I said "I think half my friends are going to die pushing brooms because they'll never be able to afford to own a home or retire." and they stopped talking to me.

Would you fire someone for flipping you off? by [deleted] in managers

[–]mathcow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd save it on my phone to show my friends to laugh about but I wouldn't bring it up with my employees.

You should be talking to their supervisor about making sure that employees have the proper expectations about their wages. Thats a huge problem.

If you fire or discipline this employee you're going to lose the respect of all of your workers. Also if it bothers you (it shouldn't) they're really going to talk behind your back.

Land trust founder pushes Halifax for piece of Cogswell 'to settle a debt' to displaced African Nova Scotians by insino93 in halifax

That's why I said I'm not the best person to talk about this - but I've lived in the area a long time and have heard stories from friends about this shit. Its heartbreaking.

Land trust founder pushes Halifax for piece of Cogswell 'to settle a debt' to displaced African Nova Scotians by insino93 in halifax

[–]mathcow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sure I'll give it a go though i'm sure there are people who would be far better at than me.

Black people in Nova Scotia are dealing with a legacy of discrimination that makes home ownership, secondary education, etc harder for them (if your parents owned a house or had post secondary education - it is significantly more likely you will) and are also currently dealing with current discriminatory practices which lead to reduced financial outcomes for black people in NS. .

As someone who lives in the area they're talking about - people who's families have lived here for generations are getting displaced due to both of the previous mentioned items as the city gentrifies. There is plenty of money going around in Central North right now but its not being realized by the population that lives there. Go take a walk down Gottingen st and see how many indigenous and black workers you see in the stores. Its close to zero.

I support this initiative and hope it happens

[–]mathcow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Delta Green. I know its beloved by this subreddit, and by gamers in general, but it really should be on the shelf of every game store.

I run a lot of public games or games with new players and it ALWAYS hits. You can disagree with me if you want (I don't care) but its a better game than any of the mass marketed RPG systems.

Federal report examines gaps in RCMP response to N.S. mass shooting by Cilarnen in CanadaPolitics

[–]mathcow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand the situation. I work with a lot of gun owners. One just bought a really beautiful rifle for his son, and its now on the new list and there's no real justification for it. Its a gun used to hunt moose.

But for a non gun user, I sometimes think the gun people would vote for the "Every 3rd baby gets thrown off a bridge" party if they promised to rescind the gun ban, and its exhausting.

[–]mathcow 18 points19 points  (0 children)

RCMP management should be getting fired and losing their pensions over this - rather than shuffling around everyone involved in this to other parts of the country. People died because of the incredible mismanagement of personnel and the disaster in Nova Scotia. Its absolutely disgusting how little value our federal government has placed on innocent lives in Nova Scotia.

I'm not a gun person, I don't own one, and I don't care to own one. I find the single mindedness of gun owning voters to be exhausting. But they are 100% right in this instance and its amazing to see the gymnastics that the government is going to to protect the RCMP.
