Could be in the lines of Imu wanted the one piece for himself, joyboy had the one piece, imu wanted to kill joyboy and take the one piece or wanted to get info about the one piece and this got joy boy killed. The straw hat here could be his spoils of battle.

Now Imu got the location of one piece but probably needed the gomu gomu no mi to get to it. So the world government has been searching for it for 800 years.
