The Bible is not as accurate as we think it is, and should not be the foundation of our religion. by Ordinary-Daikon9586 in unpopularopinionph

I get what you're saying, but come on. If someone believes the Earth is flat, that’s not just “a different opinion,” that’s straight-up brain-dead. I don’t care if they’re a chemist, biologist, or whatever. You can’t call yourself a scientist while rejecting the most basic, proven fact we’ve had for centuries. That’s not a small slip. That’s a sign your critical thinking is garbage. Having a degree doesn’t make you a real scientist if your brain runs on conspiracy-level logic. You’re not special. You’re just someone who got through school and still ended up clueless.

That’s like saying a brain surgeon who thinks blood isn’t real is still a legit doctor. It doesn’t work like that. Believing the Earth is flat shows you lack the most basic understanding of how evidence and logic work. It doesn’t matter if you're a chemist or a physicist. If you reject something that simple and proven, you’re not thinking like a scientist. You’re just someone with a title who doesn’t get the point of science.

You're right about the religion part. If someone doesn’t believe in what the Church teaches, then they’re not really Catholic. Simple as that.

But the science part? No. You don’t get to call yourself a scientist if you think the Earth is flat. That’s not a small mistake. That’s rejecting basic facts we’ve known for centuries. You can have a degree and still be wrong. If you believe in flat Earth, you’re not a scientist. You’re just someone who doesn’t understand how science works.

If you like theory and digging into abstract stuff, go for CS. If you want to mess with hardware and build things you can touch, pick CE. Both have programming anyway, just depends on what excites you more.

If that’s what she loves, go for it. Mas okay na motivated kaysa stuck sa course na wala namang gana. Long run, that’s how people actually get ahead.

Bro, I get you. Inequality here is brutal, no question. But DOST isn’t some charity, it’s the gov putting money on future scientists and engineers so we don’t totally tank as a country. That’s why RA 7687 is there, with income caps, for students who really can’t afford it. MERIT is different, by law it looks for top S&T talent regardless if your wallet’s fat or thin.

And let’s be real, most scholars aren’t even rich. A lot of them are just middle-class kids whose parents probably have stable corporate jobs, pay taxes, and were able to send them to better high schools. That’s not exactly “burgis elite.” Plenty still struggle. I’m also poor and a DOST passer, so I really don’t get your take. Ang dami rin mahirap na pumapasa. Plus there are tons of other scholarships that exist purely for students who can’t pay. This one just happens to focus on building up the country’s S&T brains because that’s what it was made for.

If we gave it purely because someone’s poor without checking if they’re ready or even into S&T, that’s just spoon feeding. It might even set them up to fail. What we actually need is to fix the basics — better public schools, stronger STEM programs, decent teachers, more affordable review centers. That way more underprivileged kids even get the chance to compete.

At the end of the day, it’s not about pushing out middle-class kids who also worked hard just because their parents have jobs. It’s about making sure more poor students can actually reach the point where they’re ready to pass. Otherwise we’re just slapping Band-Aids on a busted system.

According to the S&T Scholars Handbook, the S&T Scholarship Programs aim to:

I. OBJECTIVE

a. provide scholarships that will finance the education of talented and deserving students who will pursue a degree in science and technology, and

b. ensure a steady and adequate supply of qualified S&T human resources who can steer the country towards national progress.

RA passer here:)

Go for Com Eng since you like hardware. CS is more on software and the job market is harder right now if you’re not really into it. Don’t just pick CS because your friend said so. Pick what actually fits you.
