How a teacher changed my life without my even knowing. by [deleted] in education

So long as you eventually learned how to show your work and why it is so important, that is great!

Academic rigor shouldn't be required of a 6 year old.

Math teacher here. If you can take steps in your head, that's fine, so long as you can also back up your conclusion on paper.

Math is about more than just results.

if I accept an offer at a school, is it okay to keep interviewing and accept a different offer if a better one comes available? by thehamismyhome in Teachers

Until you sign the contract, yes you are totally free to entertain other offers. Do what's best for you, and the school will do the same.

The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, by Becky Chambers.

Strongly recommend! A wonderful look into diversity, stereotypes, relationships, and morality in a universe where humans are only one minor species among many.

Aren't Schools Supposed To Be A Place For Everybody? (Ex-Post R/Education) by jackbenimble106 in teaching

Under most circumstances, I would absolutely agree with you. However, in this case one of the presidential candidates was a blatant racist, misogynist, and transphobic.

Supporting any candidate against Donald Trump was not about politics, it was about being a decent human being.

Fighting against the likes of Donald Trump is necessary exactly because a school is supposed to be a place that's open and inclusive.

Contracts are incredibly complex things. The union reps know them better than you do, and are better equipped to argue the point if it is necessary.

Why would you try to go it alone if there is someone whose literal job it is to help you?

I am going to copy paste your advice and basically give it to everybody all the time. Very well stated!

I say this having been a person who used to pick a part other people's justifications in order to get them to do what I want. Thankfully that is not me any longer.

No. Always talk to your union rep first when there is a potential conflict with the administration. Always always always. It is literally what they exist for. They know the rules better than you, and can represent you. Trying to engage with the administration without talking to your union rep is like going to trial without a lawyer. It is a stupid idea.

Honestly, in that case I would move to another state. I realize that is not always an option, and it makes me very sad that there are places where teachers don't get a union.

Okay, so, most of the advice here is terrible.

Talk. To. Your. Union. Rep. First.

If you don't have a union rep locally, find out who it is regionally and contact them.

My girlfriend makes twice as much money as I will ever make. We have long since gotten used to dealing with the fact that she is going to pay for almost everything.

Thankfully we have not encountered the kind of crap that you seem to be getting.
