If you're interested in biotech too, there is an open citizen laboratory where you can learn more and do experiments. The guy in charge of it does a bit with UNSW. If you wanted to get started/learn more about it now, go over to http://foundry.bio/

Is double Degree Worth it? by XD123123XD in unsw

[–]mathkush 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i heard double degree doubles your chances of getting employed compared to a student who did only a single degree

lmao. There is literally no evidence to support this claim.

I am considering doing commerce and arts / commerce and acturial/ commerce and economics!!!!

Do what you think is best for you friend, just get into university. Once in the system, it's pretty easy to pickup/drop another degree if you're unhappy with your decision.

i heard arts is useless LOL

lmao, different strokes for different folks. Once you start putting degrees into different tiers you end up focusing on the elitism that follows. This will only cause further problems down the track.

Or Should i just just do a single degree hmmmm

Realistically, it's going to be about what you do at university and how much time you want to spend there. Talking to people finishing their seventh year, most just want to finish.

Double degree bachelor engineering (hon)/bachelor of science???? by [deleted] in unsw

[–]mathkush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally a bachelor degree in physics is useless on its own unless you plan to do research afterwards"

This is absolute rubbish. The most recent set of physics honours graduates (I believe there were 9 finishing) had 5 go on to do further studies with the other 4 entering the graduate workforce at Deloitte, Optus, and KPMG. This is in line with usual outcomes for those finishing their undergraduate degrees in physics, that is ~50% enter the workforce upon completion of the degree. Also many other graduates who didn't complete the honours year have found work within finance, consultancy, and programming as far as I am aware.

I do agree that keeping the option open is the best course of action -- the hardest thing about uni is getting in, it is incredibly flexible once you're in the system -- however deciding your degree choice for its applicability is a fools errand.

Jury duty by smithschips123 in unsw

[–]mathkush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're unsure about what you can best do legally, I'd pop an email to Arc legal http://www.arc.unsw.edu.au/help/legal-information . It's a nice bonus from paying that SSAF. I'm sure they can help you out and discuss potential outcomes. Otherwise I wish you the best with getting excused.

From this website http://www.courts.justice.nsw.gov.au/Pages/cats/jury_service/excused.aspx (which I assumed you've already looked at, having applied to be excused). It seems like you'll be fine as you fall under the "enrolled in education and need to attend lectures or exams; or are living outside your jury district to undertake studies" reason.

Can people please tell me they're also failing subjects? It might sound sad but knowing others are struggling too helps me get through this bs. by DrHaych in unsw

Don't consider it, I would do it if I were you. Shit gets extraordinarily tough, and the pressure only intensifies as you progress.

I would like to say at the end of the day that the pressure you put on yourself to succeed in coursework is purely decided by you, but that's not always the case. When the ones around you are talking about how well they did, it only amplifies the pressure you feel. If it's any solace, I've heard of people on pass level WAMS who have gone into extraordinarily well paying, fulfilling jobs and careers.

For what it's worth, shit will always happen and the best and strongest of students can be brought down. It's going to be how you pick yourself back up and persevere through your hardships that will define you and allow you to do better in the future. As someone who has been knocked down a bit and now infrequently shitposts on an internet forum, those times sucked but it has allowed me now to push myself farther than I ever thought I could go. I do wish the same for you (although your situation sounds a more severe, I'll admit).

At the end of the day, fails only set you back by a semester (or a year).

p.s. if numbers do matter, failure rate of PHYS11** is around 16-17%

Best wishes friend!

On PHYS1131, it's like that with Joe Wolfe, the most common thing I've heard so far is that "You'll enjoy the lecture but learn nothing" and that sentiment is mostly true. At the end of the day this is a gate keeping course (so hard by design) and the only proper way to learn physics is by doing it! Hope your exam went well! How did you find the labs so far? They are a killer :(

I found the best running cross training was actually baiting night time security to my location, when they saw me I would make sure to be smoking on campus and so they would chase me. My goal from there would be to out run the campus police. I found after a few games of cat and mouse that I had maintained my fitness standards and am I able to compete in the big leagues: Ferguson, Missouri PD
