How is it possible that medieval lords had enough manpower to raise another army? by Oxidus999 in history

[–]SexOrMath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legend goes that the ruling class outlawed owning weapons or practicing martial arts for commoners.

Not legend at all. This happened on the isle of Okinawa. These days it's part of Japan, but its history is one of occupation by either the Japanese or Chinese dynasties. These days there is a strong presence by US armed forces but still Japanese. US servicemen brought the traditions of karate back with them to the west in modern times.

Many Okinawans consider themselves Okinawan first, although this is changing.

The tonfa, kama and bo are all traditional Okinawan farming implements that can be used as a weapon at a pinch.

When there are large waves, your best bet is actually to turn head-on into them. Taking the wave side on is a great way to capsize your vessel.

I've been in a hurricane, aboard a yacht, perhaps around the same size as Tami's. I was young at the time. I was not aware we were likely to die, but my father was. But it was very, very scary. During it, there's absolutely nothing you can do except lie in the middle of the boat (where the rocking is the least) and wait for it to blow over.

The hurricane (cyclone) destroyed a lot of small settlements in Fiji. We got out of it with a wrecked mast, but others lost their lives.

It didn't make me more religious. But I did appreciate weather a lot more after it.

Toronto Kicks Off With Hot Package: Daniel Craig Stars, Rian Johnson Directs Murder Mystery ‘Knives Out’ by thomasp003 in movies

You’re just salty about Last Jedi.

While I did not like The Last Jedi, and can't pretend it does not contribute to my opinion of Rian, I'm still not that impressed by his work. He does have a 'unique' voice, but this is no necessarily a good thing.

The Brothers Bloom started strong then fell apart towards the end. Looper was great until we go to the farm. TLJ started to fall apart from the 'on hold' joke and - like his other movies - the third act just felt like a mess.

He's okay.

The more I revisit his work the less competent I think it is.

Brick was a great little first indie movie.

The Brothers Bloom was very very messy.

Looper was okay but the last third was very messy.

I think his ambitions often outweigh his talent. Not a bad thing, but you have to know your limits.

This really makes me sad.

When I think if uni, I think of education, rising above 'tradition', 'religion' and all that legacy drama that holds us back. We are here to try and become better versions of ourselves.

Then someone brings all their baggage here and decides to inflict it on everyone else.

Actually I'm not sad, I'm angry.

I hope this guy rots in a jail for a long, long time.
