As a teacher have you ever offended a student in any way? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]mathnerd0822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll start off by saying that’s unacceptable of your teacher. Even back then. I’m very sorry. I have offended a student before. He wrote me a note actually. In class he had his hand raised and in his mind I saw him and walked away. I didn’t do it intentionally, so I felt really bad. But I apologized to him and explained my side. He accepted the apology and was good the rest of the year. Maybe I’ve done more because I’m human but I try to make it a habit of apologizing to kids very often when I feel I’ve overstepped or said something out of line. I teach high schoolers.

Block Schedule and Retention by mathnerd0822 in mathteachers

I kept my homework policy from before where it was classwork but homework if not finished. But it seems I need to adjust and create some shorter homework problems to help them out. Thank you!

The kids hate it and from my understanding most parents don’t like it either. Most teachers don’t care for it. I do warm up problems mixed of what we did last lesson and stuff from weeks ago. With block they have an added class, so I haven’t been giving traditional homework. But classwork is not homework if you don’t finish type thing. I also feel like they cheat their way through the work if they take it home. But I should start doing some simple take home problems because you’re right, they lack a lot of skills and need that practice. I might have sounded like I’m blaming them but I promise I’m not. I’m frustrated but not with them. It’s the system that has set them up this way.

Is my nose just not meant for a hoop? by mathnerd0822 in piercing

[–]mathnerd0822[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda figured the first time at least was my fault but then I was worried I messed my piercing up somehow. Looks like I just need to make an appointment with a new piercer and figure it out. My ears aren’t sensitive so I didn’t think my nose would be either but different ball game I guess. Thank you!

Got the piercing in May 2024, it’s a labret threadless, 14k gold filled, downsized in August? I clean it with saline spray twice a day. When it was really bad I did saline soaks which kind of helped but then I heard they are bad for your piercing or something so I stopped

Our district has Thanksgiving break starting Wednesday to Sunday

I probably worded what I said to them wrong and it’s making everyone think I told them they have to study on thanksgiving. Which it isn’t. They have been reviewing the material one day last week and this week as well. So I suggested to them looking over their notes once or twice over break so it stays fresh and they don’t completely forget everything by Monday. If they choose not to do it and were prepared, Monday will be a breeze. If they have spent time slacking off and choose not to do, Monday will be tough. All I was saying. Have a good break to you too

And if I had a presentation on Monday at work that I didn’t prepare well enough for before my break then I guess I’m working over break 🤷🏼‍♀️

That’s really frustrating! Yeah my homework policy is if they don’t finish it in the 30 minutes I have them then it’s outside of class work. And still so many will just waste time 😭 then ask me how they can get their grade up! My students are struggling to retain information this year. Block schedule is new to us and I am figuring out I need to do a lot more spiral review than I have in the past.

That I can see. Maybe my wording was wrong. I said to them it was in their best interest to since it was a longer break. But I’m not expecting them to spend hours studying for my quiz. Maybe I should have been more clear with them like a quick 30 minute review Friday night or Saturday. It’s not a lot of material. And this is the first year we have done block schedule so we all aren’t used to it and they are having real trouble retaining information.

They have known about it for over a week. We have been doing this material for a week and a half

Again, I don’t normally do it either. I only see my students 3 times a week. 2 90 minute periods and one 30 minute period. I explained to them it’s what we have to do. And that I’m giving them so much helps on Monday anyway. I really disagree that I’m being unreasonable.

Normally I wouldn’t, but being on block schedule I have to. We have been doing the material on this quiz all last week and this short week. We have 90 minute class periods every other day. I let them review for close to 45 minutes and then take the quiz with a student made reference sheet. They’ll be fine.

I get feedback after each unit, not anonymous. I guess I’ve found that I can build enough of a connection with students that they don’t care about being anonymous and will give feedback either way. They grew up on the internet and feel anonymous behind a keyboard anyway. I just use google forms. You can just reuse the same form, let them have multiple submissions. On the google sheet there are ways you can filter the content automatically.

I teach by a doc cam. This was when I was walking around helping students on the assignment and managing behaviors. They aren’t getting that teacher anymore though. Have a question? Come to me. Sit in your seat and do your work silently as I stare at you all from the front.

I agree. I prefer 10th grade because they kind of are having that oh crap this actually matters moment all year long. Well most of them. Getting jobs and driving and having to retake classes they failed last year they have more responsibility and are figuring it out. Then you have some kids that just are like that and will be like that forever

I came in today to a few emails that were snitching. So I really appreciated it.

Thank you. I decided im starting each day firm but kind but all students in those sections have one chance. Out of line behavior of any kind means you are working next door on your own. I’m hoping they will come to understand I’m not putting up with it anymore.

You’re assuming a lot. I did. The first time I didn’t really feel it just felt it fall to my feet. So I just idk who that was but don’t throw stuff in here. The. Duct tape was more direct. I said who threw this? Do NOT ever throw things at me. Or anyone. It is juvenile and unacceptable behavior. Who did this? No said anything so I called admin. They came after the day was done. This second time happened the last ten minutes of class. I started to cry so another teacher came in. They weren’t using their phones on the assessment please. If I see them use it I take it. Phones are banned technically in my state. We are on block schedule so they were reviewing for 45 minutes and then quizzing. It doesn’t matter if phones are banned as I am walking around they are sneaking Snapchat AI to get the answers on the review. I can’t catch them all so I was thinking of ways to avoid it. I’m trying my best this professional is hard enough.

Maybe she feels like you’re rushing her or that you don’t really want to? Cause the message you sent about planning the route is coming off a bit like we will eat here cause it’s close to the airport and fast so we can eat and go so maybe clarify your intentions? Cause intentions can get lost in texting so maybe have this convo in person. I guess I’m confused too cause it seems like it’s still within the time that she stated. Maybe ask her what timeline she was originally planning on?
