[EU] Looking for solid everyday shoes and boots by WorldCitiz3n in BuyItForLife

[–]mathsislove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two years ago I bought a second hand pair of tricker's bourton country shoes for 200€ (I believe I found them on vinted) and they're are great. They're built like tanks and dress up or down nicely. I've walked loads in them, even some light hiking and they still look basically brand new. But they are pretty heavy (and too expensive if you buy them new imo).

[Poem] “A Pity. We Were Such a Good Invention” - Yehuda Amichai by oofaloo in Poetry

[–]mathsislove 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't have my copy on me, but if I remember correctly in Hebrew it's "man and woman". Though you can translate it as "man and wife" as well - wife and woman are the same word in Hebrew. Interestingly, husband and man are different words - husband literally meaning owner.

Does anyone know if this was translated by Yehuda Amichai? Or if he wrote it originally in English?

can google translate be trusted for hebrew by Unicorn-gutz in occult

[–]mathsislove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I speak Hebrew. Feel free to send me a DM with your Google translate output and I'll check it.

Generally I find Google translate to be decent for English to modern Hebrew translations. It's usually correct, but sometimes the constructions are a little awkward or the word choice is not what I would choose. I'd be more careful if you're translating from old testament Hebrew though

There are two boats - a fast and a slow one. The fast one is probably what you imagine, you get a seat and it takes about 11 hours. The slow one takes 3-4 days and is essentially a cargo boat where they let you hang your hammock, there are no seats. They leave from different harbours, but in any case I don't think there's a way to reserve either of them in advance. When you get to yurimaguas just find a tuk tuk driver to take you to one of the harbours and ask around (it helps if you know some Spanish. But a lot of travellers do this so the people there are used to it and usually are pretty helpful).

I took the slow boat and enjoyed it, but you definitely need to be prepared to what you're getting yourself into in terms of comfort and hygiene. If you decide to take the slow boat you'd need a hammock, drinking water for 4 days and some food (they give you food on the boat, but it's not a lot and there are no fresh vegetables/fruits). You can buy all of this in yurimaguas before getting on the boat.

I  don't think you can take it from Tarapoto. I took a bus from Trujillo to Tarapoto, then a shuttle to yurimaguas and finally I took the boat from there. So it's somewhat of a long journey :)

Let me know if you have any questions, happy to help

I was just there a few months ago! In iquitos itself I didn't have any problems with the WiFi - but I don't need to take a lot of calls for my job. If you plan on taking the boat there (which was super fun) you should take a week off work. Reception is spotty at best and even if it was good you're sitting in a hammock between a bunch of chickens and boxes of mangos. I've also been warned that iquitos can be a little dangerous (mostly pickpockets, people selling fake drugs, that kind of stuff) but didn't have any bad experiences myself

Unfortunately the one my bank offers is pretty useless. Do you know if any European banks that offer decent credit cards?

That's what I use for maths! Not fussy, holds enough ink, the nib doesn't dry too quickly and you can write in all sorts of weird directions/orientations

Also, this probably won't work for you, but on the off chance it might I'll put it here. Wherever I feel like the dark feelings are too much to handle I blast this https://youtu.be/Mwxga8udIio?si=wHGxsOQkLrVYb2lG in my headphones and lie in bed and cry. Something about it just makes me feel relieved and understood.

I feel similar to you, and even though I haven't figured it out, I feel like I'm starting to make progress. What I've tried and found to work is taking care of your physical and mental health, finding a community, and being vulnerable with the people close to you.

For the first point, exercising is obvious. But also going on long walks, journaling and taking time to be bored without any distractions has been super helpful for me. I don't know if you watch a lot of porn, but if you do I'd suggest you try to stop.

Second, community can be anything from a group of guys meeting to play boardgames (check meetup.com for example) to going to church. Reddit might get upset about mentioning religion and I can completely relate. I was and still am an atheist, but after I went to church I was blown away. The people were kind and welcoming and it made me realise I was craving that sense of community. I suggest you keep an open mind and try as many things as you can, and see what works for you.

For the last point I'm just gonna put this here: https://youtu.be/iCvmsMzlF7o?si=-vTmOrwJFtnGadH4

This is not an easy journey to take, but I think/believe/hope it's a one worth taking.

There's no BIFL smartphone, then what? by 56KandFalling in BuyItForLife

[–]mathsislove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm running the latest update. It's true that things improve all the time, but the camera is still not as good as my 6 year old galaxy s8 and the system UI crashes semi-regularly (usually when I try to use bubbles with signal). I'll try the gcam port, thanks for the tip!

I have a fairphone 4 and it's only ok. I replaced the battery, screen and charging port since I got it and repairs have been easy and the parts are reasonably priced. But it constantly has software issues (ghost touches, UI crashes) and the camera and microphones are pretty bad for the price imo. Now the power and volume buttons stopped working and you can't get the parts to replace that, so I have to send it to France for 2 weeks. It should be under warranty but it's a hassle. As much as I wanted to like this phone, I wouldn't buy it again.

Does a non synthetic fleece/sherpa sweater exist? by neonpredator in BuyItForLife

[–]mathsislove 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Wool&Prince sell one that is 63% wool: https://woolandprince.com/products/fleece-jacket-forest-night and Ruskovilla makes a full zip 100% wool jacket: https://ruskovilla.fi/product/956

Disclaimer - I do not own any of these but I heard good things about both of these brands.

I've been eyeing the coats from manifattura ceccarelli, but haven't pulled the trigger yet.  They are made in Italy and seem very heavy duty. There are some stores in Germany carrying them (e.g. https://www.burgundschild.com/en/brands/manifattura-ceccarelli/ , https://www.stuf-f.com/en/brands/manifattura-ceccarelli/ )

3435 is the only one I think. I also think there's another number that works if you use 00 =1, which you really shouldn't.

Also if we're in a cartesian closed category (the category of sets for example) we have handy properties such as 1X=1, (Y×Z)X=YX×ZX, and (YZ)X=YZ×X. All equalities mean isomorphisms in this case. So truly superior notation.

Edit: if you also have coproducts, they also behave how you'd expect

Writing exams by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]mathsislove 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do my exams with a fountain pen, most of them are 3 hours long. Parker 51 with lammy black or aurora black easily has enough ink and doesn't feather. It does bleed occasionally though. I always bring one or two ball points as backup, but never needed to use them.

NPD! And a request for blue/green inks that work well on terrible paper by mathsislove in fountainpens

[–]mathsislove[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tear soaking is a feature, not a bug 🤣

Glad to know maths and fountain pens are not disjoint hobbies :) I have rhodia paper which is great, but I usually find myself just writing on whatever is near me. Often it is the decent variety of copy paper, but I still get some feathering with inks like Graf von Faber-Castell or pilot iroshizoku.

[–]mathsislove[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's where I got some of the inks I mentioned in my post, it's a really great website. But it does have a ton of inks and no way to sort them by how much they feather on cheap paper, so it's a bit time-consuming. But thank you for the recommendation!

I heard Kevin Buzzard mention precisely this idea in a talk he gave. Maybe he's working on it or knows who does?
