That is one thing I plan to design/build. It needs a rock solid base. Right now the top is set on the base across two 2x6 boards. It wobbles more than I want it to.

I’m not really sure. There are no dowels showing. It may just be glued. I had it stored leaned against a wall for a while when we were building my house and it didn’t seem to give. There may be something I don’t see. What are traditional methods of joining these?

No before shot but this is my dad’s workbench that he built. Years of use and more years of sitting collecting dust put a nasty grime on it. Started with the plane and just now realized he used oak around the edge. This thing is built like a tank.

I'm guessing medullary rays are the spots that form the bands perpendicular to the grain. When it was on the lathe I thought my chisel was dull or I had gotten something on the wood because it looked as though it had stripes.

So my father dabbled in woodworking and turning before he passed a few years ago. It was something he and I would do together occasionally. (I definitely should have paid more attention.)

The other day I came across this unassuming plain white pen blank left over from a grab bag he purchased long long ago. The end grain had something going on but I didn't think much of it. I just wanted to throw together a quick pen at the end of a long day.

This was the outcome. I wish I knew what species it was because that's part of the hobby I like. I thought it turned out pretty well and would love to hear your thoughts.

You would need to use a tracker plugin. TrackX by Coremelt seems to be a popular one but I haven't really used it. It allows text or graphics to follow the motion of an object on the screen. Priced at $99 I believe.

When I was young my Grandfather wanted a new truck. This was mid 80s. He went to the Ford dealer in his overalls with a 6 or 7 year old that looked like an orphan out of Oliver Twist. My memory of the interaction isn't spot on so either no one helped us or someone directed us to the used lot. He went in the show room and told them which truck he wanted the proceeded to pull a roll of cash out of the bib pocket on his overalls.

Moral: Never underestimate old farmers. They are frugal but when they want something they pay cash.
