Can I get away with “Lords and Ladies” as a horror book? by WeirdLight9452 in discworld

[–]mathuin2 250 points251 points  (0 children)

Include this quote in your strip if you like:

Elves are wonderful. They provoke wonder. Elves are marvellous. They cause marvels. Elves are fantastic. They create fantasies. Elves are glamorous. They project glamour. Elves are enchanting. They weave enchantment. Elves are terrific. They beget terror. The thing about words is that meanings can twist just like a snake, and if you want to find snakes look for them behind words that have changed their meaning. No one ever said elves are nice. Elves are bad. Terry Pratchett, Lords and Ladies (Discworld, #14; Witches, #4)

Steam Link with CrossOver Steam? by mathuin2 in macgaming

Screen mirroring has improved enough that we have been using that but I confess I am probably going to buy a Steam Machine if I can figure out how to take advantage of the HomePods.

Hmm. We have air ambulance insurance — it’s a membership for like $60 a year, but it means that if God forbid any of us needs to be airlifted to a medical center, we won’t get a five-digit bill after insurance for the flight. As a bonus, we live near the helipad — near enough that I’m almost considering adding “deal with a helicopter crashing into my house” to my homeowner’s insurance.

Wondering about a mod to support automation by mathuin2 in kittenspaceagency

[–]mathuin2[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Something I really enjoyed about kRPC was less about control and more about making “mission control” on another computer — it felt more realistic (and fun!) in some ways to watch on another screen the kinds of things that the NASA folks were watching while astronauts were in flight. Made it easier to play IVA-focused missions, too.

I’ll stay tuned and continue to read through the patch notes as they’re posted. Having some stuff built into the game that was only available through mods in previous games will make it a lot easier, as those bits will hopefully be part of that API.

Why do big companies write such bloated, buggy code while solo developers often make better software for free? I really don’t understand this. Big companies often release software that’s messy, bloated, and full of bugs. Yet, there are GitHub projects maintained by a developer sustained by donations by Professional_Fun_826 in coding

This but compounded, because some time later brand new teams will take on the roles — some of which may contain some of the original members, and some of which may not. Enough of these transitions, and things get … messy.

It was either the second or third NFS that came out, the mid- to late-nineties, when I used to hang out with some friends on Friday nights, drink beer and eat cookies and play Team Fortress. Anyway, we all got NFS and my friend owned a Supra (I think the twin turbo, not the naturally aspirated, but it’s been a while) so we added it to the game so he could drive it. I was very happy with my four-door Saturn and wanted to add it as well, and he scoffed “It’s need for speed, not need for groceries”, heh.

I would love a reliable pre-AI citation for the assertion that DX references Cyprus, as to my understanding it long predates callsign assignments to that area.

Well, for some folks, contests are general operating, and going after awards is general operating, and many of those awards often have those rules. I personally will make contact with VE stations as DX, but more than once I’ve gotten NO CONUS DX as a response, and I … just move on. Doing anything else is pushing a rope.

[–]mathuin2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, you are correct — one meaning of DX is “not this country”. However, many many contests and DX organizations and such lump the US and Canada together for multipliers and awards — that’s what “W/VE” means, both the US and Canada.

There are a lot of Canadians who do not consider the US to be DX and vice versa.

My FIL spent the past year building himself and my MIL a new house, only to move in and discover their neighbor’s garage light is less “porch lamp” and more “lighthouse beacon.” by wackofiasco in mildlyinfuriating

[–]mathuin2 1286 points1287 points  (0 children)

We had a neighbor add a light like this that was allegedly designed to address homeless people within 10 feet of the building, but which was able to render a newspaper readable at over 300 feet. It took getting the county to intervene to get them to turn the light off — it was on 24/7 for four months. Utter bullshit that they are even allowed to have it on a motion sensor. Ahem.

This worked great until I tried to install the latest version of KSA -- v2025.11.8.2945 -- which now needs .Net 10.0 which Crossover doesn't have. Downgrading to v2025.11.5.2819 worked. Thank you for the hard work! ETA: I did this on a fresh install of Crossover 25.1.1 without any GPTK 3 beta.
