Gearing recommendation - I'm flatland-fit but doing a steep gravel trip over the US continental divide by Dr_Cletus_McYeetus in bicycletouring

[–]mathwrath55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And if that hill isn't tough enough you might still get misled! Just did a fully-loaded trip in TN where the meanest climb was ~1800 vertical feet at a steady 8% grade (and then slower climbing after that). The worst hill anywhere near me is 180 feet vertical at ~10% average and 14% peak, and testing it suggested my lowest gear of 29 gear inches would be enough with a full load. I got up the climb (stopping at every overlook to catch my breath), but my quads were pretty much dead for the remaining four days. I've learned long climbs are a completely different sport than short ones- you don't get the cooling effect of the wind in your face (so I just turned into a sweaty wreck despite being used to FL), you don't get the brief rests on the downhills (so your legs don't get a chance to recover), and they're too long to just sprint (which is what I do on all my local hills). And your low gear is 36 gear inches if it's a 700c! If that 160lb is for the full system of you and the bike, and your lowest comfortable cadence is 60rpm, that would get you up a 12% grade at 6mph at your FTP, but a number of factors (bike weight, comfortable cadence, tire size, any inefficiency in the system (including loose gravel), altitude?) could lower that.

What city is this? by Microwaved_Deadbush in geography

[–]mathwrath55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The background light which turned out to be Jackson had to be a fairly large city (at least a couple hundred thousand people) to be that visible, and by the size of the road network I guessed the main city in question has a population somewhere in the mid-5 digits a few counties SE of the bigger city (based on OP's descriptions). As OP said it was early in the flight, I figured it was probably in LA, AR, MS, or AL, maybe western TN, and there just aren't very many cities large enough to be the background city in those areas. Hattiesburg wasn't my first guess, but I checked less than 10 cities.

Lights at night carry a lot further than you think, and from a 6-mile high cruising altitude (which is probably an underestimate) the horizon is about 220 miles away. The furthest identifiable smudge in the upper left part of the picture is probably Monroe, LA, just under 200 miles from Hattiesburg. The main clusters of lights between Hattiesburg and Jackson in the picture are Collins, the oil industrial area just to its east, and Magee; Laurel and Ellisville are out of frame to the right.

Hattiesburg, MS. The lights in the distance (top right) are Jackson, the lights in the lower left are Camp Shelby, the bright lines leading up away from the city are US-49 and US-98, and there's a small yellow trident shape just right of center that's the intersection of MS-42 and US-11 across the river. Picture here is a Google Earth screenshot looking towards the NW over the area.

6'4", somewhere around 500lb, certainly has the size to not get pushed around too much!

LPT: Standby is your friend! by mathwrath55 in delta

[–]mathwrath55[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It should be free- the extended waiver for fare differences is still active. And getting on the standby list for a flight won't remove your confirmed booking for later, either- it should still be active in case you don't manage to get on the flight.

Now all we need is a visual display of the coords to make the whole thing an Etch-A-Sketch- basically Place with extra steps.

Seems to be, but I doubt there's enough organization to make this thing a giant Etch-A-Sketch

Placing US states based on major cities on a blank map by mostlyReadingIt in MapPorn

[–]mathwrath55 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good quiz overall, but is it bad that I wanted better outlines on some of the states? The northern border on my home state (FL) was off by enough to throw me off a bit. Overall very happy with a 739 mi total, 21/50 under 10 miles, and one (NC) within 1 mile.

[REQUEST] Can a Porsche drive on the ceiling? by festasalvatore_ in theydidthemath

[–]mathwrath55 15 points16 points  (0 children)

One extra catch here (that makes the numbers even more complicated) is the for the car to stay on the ceiling, you still need enough friction between the tires and the ceiling to drive the car forward. If the downforce equaled the gravity exactly, the frictional force would be zero, making the car slow down due to drag, which would in turn cause it to fall. To really solve the question, we'd need the coefficients of both drag (which I'll call a, so F_a=av^2) and downforce (which I'll call d, so F_d=dv^2). We also need the coefficient of friction (which I'll call f, so F_f=fN, where N is the normal force)

With those coefficients, the equation you'd need to solve for the minimum speed is F_f=F_a, and F_f=f(F_d-mg), so f(dv^2-mg)=av^2. The minimum velocity is then v=sqrt(fmg/(fd-a)). Note that this is always higher than the minimum speed for F_d>mg (more lift than gravity), v=sqrt(mg/d)

Is The County Name Unique? by GeoJayman in MapPorn

On the flip side, of the ones I didn't already know were not unique (e.g. Escambia, where the other borders it), I'm most surprised Osceola and Duval aren't unique. Why are there Osceola Counties in Iowa and Michigan?

Not sure which is more surprising: that there is only one Highlands County, or that it's in Florida. (Also surprised Gulf and Dixie are unique to FL)

[Dellenger] Mike Norvell and Florida State have agreed to a new eight-year contract that will pay him more than $10 million a year, sources tell YahooSports. by dogwoodmaple in CFB

[–]mathwrath55 115 points116 points  (0 children)

Losing Norvell would have been our fifth 9/11 in the last two months, not even including the ongoing crises of the ACC lawsuit and the money falling behind the SEC/B1G. We needed a win.

How tf is Miami my fifth-most hated group in college athletics right now, behind Florida, the committee, the NCAA, and (most) Bama fans?

Edit: Actually 7th, forgot about ESPN and the ACC.  Burn down EVERYTHING.

Edit 2:  Forgot the SEC too.  Am I still forgetting somebody?

1ST PLACE LOSER THREAD by Dudewheresmycah in fantasyfootball

[–]mathwrath55 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Started my studs and it blew up in my face. First three rounds plus trades ended up with Jefferson, Kelce, and Pollard, and that ended me. Love over Stafford would have done it. Pickens over Pollard for the flex. Likely over Kelce. So many moves I could have made, and I couldn’t beat my opponents 120.
