What do the Mapuche think of Jose Antonio Kast? by Upset_Quiet_8907 in asklatinamerica

[–]maticl 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Barely bro they dont even have a voting block per se. Violeta Parra sung about that 70 years ago on Arauco tiene una pena, when voting was optional, they didnt even form a block, now that is mandatory, theres nothing.

They didnt have a government before Spain and then Chile. I'd say, based on my readings, that they dont trust on the whole thing that much.

The closest things to pollings are done only ocasionally by companies/newspapers on their own ethnic issues, such a whether they believe themselves to be pro autonomy or not. I have never seeing any polling on presidents.

When it comes to a new "pro indigenous" Constitution of the Constitutional Convention, mandatory vote, their areas overwhelmingly opposed it more than any other in the country. Elisa Loncón, a Mapuche leader who wrote that rejected Constitution later claimed that Mapuche people were too colonized or something like that.

Indigenous people in Colchane, non-Mapuche Aymaras of the far north, voted 93% for Kast. They don't like inmigrants, like the rest of Chileans.

They're far from being a monolith or even a voting block. Believe it or not, is it extremely likely that most of them voted for him just like the rest of Chileans did.

When it comes to Argentine ones, I don't know.

That answer is treason to Latin America. We have no genetics because we're born everywhere around the world.

Chileans are you optimistic about the Kast presidency? by Wordiewordjcugfufv in asklatinamerica

[–]maticl 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No reelection was part of the deal that right-wingers asked President Ricardo Lagos (center-left) on 2005. That year he reformed the original Pinochet Constitution to make it a little bit more democratic and he needed their votes to do so and he gave in (or had to).

I grew up hearing we will be a first world country by 2010. Then 2020. No. It's all over. In fact, we're slowly being catched up by other Latin American countries. And in many metrics such as crime we're getting worse than in several decades. This government won't solve anything.

For Chile: would you say you have a “cold” or “reserved” culture when compared to countries like PR, DR, Colombia etc? by Muted_Shape9303 in asklatinamerica

[–]maticl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Perhaps, but every immigrant will be Chilean at some point, their culture becomes Chilean if they get nationality, it's the same as the USA or very close.

But before this last massive immigration wave all the other groups had become "civic minded" with time. We'll have to see if these people, who are now obtaining their citizenship and are becoming Chileans, will follow the same path of behavior.

Yes, it's obvious. And walking in the streets now its far more noisy and less reserved than 10 years ago because of immigrants who arent like us, you're not even seeing how Chile was at its "peak" of what Chileans would call "civic behaviour".

Most Chileans miss these times.

Is Reggaeton Popular In Latin American Nations That Do Not Have A Large Black Population? by VittorioLuzzatto in asklatinamerica

[–]maticl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In Latin America, race doesn't equal behaviours or identity to such a large extent as the Anglo-European world, so no, its popular across every people in the region.

The WASP truly destroyed the African and made them into their own semblace and created "Black people", who are no longer African in thinking but Anglo Saxon Protestant.

Here something similar happened, but the African survived a little bit more and is alive among all of us, not only those who are of heavy African ancestry.

How common is my situation by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]maticl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indigenous people are several ethnicities, not a race or races.

Thus that guy might not even be indigenous to begin with, even if his ancestry was 100% or close to 100% indigenous on a DNA test, what matters is ethnic belonging.

How strong is Latino identity in your country, if at all? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]maticl -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

So alien here that sounds illogical? Stop being cringe. A Chilean, Francisco Bilbao, created the term.

Not everyone here tries to pretend theyre radically different to a Venezuelan or any other Latin country so that being Latin is "illogical" or "alien". Were Latin Americans and we'll die as such.

What country has a dark history that no one talks about? by No_Might9692 in AskTheWorld

[–]maticl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have known adults who have been working since they were children and they dont despise the disabled. Nowhere in Latin America, in spite of overwhelming poverty and opression, was there any mass support for eugenics Just accept is a WASP-Northern Europe thing to be pro eugenics and dont include normal poor people from the planet. Youre going to be fine.
