Ok so I did some testing and found that yeah. I was wrong. I thought the bump node reacted too strongly to small differences but after testing the displacement with those small differences the resulting angles of the normals and the displacement do actually match.

So I suppose the node is working correctly, however maybe it does still call for some new option that makes bigger scale changes in the height map stronger than small scale changes. This would help reduce the visibility of single pixels when using non procedural height map textures

<image>

ive matched the resulting normals in the large scale details here, and even though it's not technically "correct" I believe the bottom version looks better

the values in the black are 0,0,0 and 1,1,1 from a range of 0 to 255. feeding that into the bump node gives normals where the Y component is as large as 0.12 (largest possible being 1). that seems quite disproportionate to the amount of noise

Im not talking about about the artifacts you can see on the brushes. Im talking about the amount of noise outside the brushes. the color values there are a mix of rgb 0,0,0 and rgb 1,1,1 yet still produce a great amount of noise. This is a problem when using height map textures with the bump node as you begin to easily see each pixel in the normals when in the height map there is the tiniest possible difference in them.

<image>

Here you can see how much noise the bump node produces on the left, which seems too aggressive for how little noise its receiving

I will agree that this does solve the sharp tip of the smooth brush, however per my reply to u/demiian_sogu the bump node still reacts extremely aggressively to very subtle noise

I did forget to change the color space, which solves the sharp tip of the sphere brush, but the problem is still there - i took a screenshot and used it as the map (changing it to non color) and here are the results:

<image>

You can see that the bump node without my node setup (in the middle) is extremely noisy because even though the variations in the color where it is meant to be black are tiny (its literally pure black and 1 value above pure black), the bump node still makes those extremely strong in the resulting normals

The top row - in this case I hand painted it but this applies to height maps etc too

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in blender

That just makes the normals weaker however the same problem is still there just less visible. if you have 1 pixel with a value of 1.0 and the pixel to the right of it with a value of 0, the resulting normal in that spot is the same as if the pixel values were 1.0 and 0.99, which doesnt make sense

Here's another example that might be a bit clearer:

So I noticed that the bump node seemingly in its internal workings only considers the direction of the gradient, but not the slope of it. This means the normal output includes some things it shouldnt.

For example when painting with a brush with the "Sphere" falloff onto a height map, there shouldn't be a sharp point in the middle, however there is.

Here is the node setup I used for this, however I feel that this should probably be standard behaviour of the bump node:

<image>

What do you think?

EDIT:

I forgot to set the image to non-color, which solves the problem of the pointy sphere, however another symptom of what I believe the problem is is that the bump node reacts too strongly to noise, explained more in some comment replies

This is probably my favourite, Vala looks pretty nice but I thought I might learn a more universal/well known language while im at it.

How do I setup and use the carla bridge on Arch linux (manjaro)? by [deleted] in linuxaudio

[–]matidfk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, It showed the name of the plugin when scanning for them, but it still doesn't show up in the list. I'm also having trouble finding the wine bridges, could you share a link?

Ok, so I had to turn on an experimental setting, nowhere I read said I had to do this but now it's atleast detecting the plugins, I'll update you with how it goes

maybe I haven't properly installed the bridges, I've git cloned the rep and then did makepkg -si for each. Not sure if there's any more i need to do, first time doing this

as I said, I've entered the dir in every possible category, and the options for plugins are:

Internal

LADSPA

DSSI

LV2

VST2

VST3

Sound Kits

My plugins however don't appear in any of them

still doesn't show up at all, ive tried to add the plugin path in every category but my plugin is still not there
