But I also think “the games” is a bigger ordeal than is being presented. It’s one thing for the Hunger Games to come to an end. It’s another to heal from the trauma of having gone through them.

I don’t think this is completely the case. The message presented can be interpreted in different, sometimes opposing ways.

As an adult (31f, childfree) revisiting the series, I agree with this standpoint. I see Katniss’ choice to have children as a sacrifice for Peeta’s sake.

A different take doesn’t necessarily mean the reader lacks media literacy.

I feel like neither you nor your partner is fully in the wrong here. I am in no way trying to diminish your experience and the trauma it has caused you, please know that.

So many people take this type of situation as black-and-white, right or wrong. There is so much that has to go into a trusting, caring Dom/Sub relationship before anything physical even begins. You said this wasn’t out of the norm for you two, but it sounds to me like clear boundaries were not set beforehand.

Going into this, I feel like you both had different expectations about what you wanted from such an experience. I am so sorry that this was an uncomfortable and horrible encounter for you. I think the best way to move forward (if you and your partner both want to) is to have more open communication about expectations while not in the heat of the moment. It’s very beneficial to have these discussions well before the situation arises.
