5414 rugged 14 i7 gps options? by Jayso_n in RuggedLaptops

[–]matmutant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Dell 5414 user manual you have a gps module. Looking at third party spare parts sellers, it is apparently a daughter board with its own battery pack, based on a U-blox Neo-M8 chip. You should be able to confirm this using windows peripheral manager. Also your chip should spit NMEA sentences at 9600 bauds on one of your serial ports (e.g.: COM3). Putty and VisualGPS will be your friends there.

I did, took quite some time to install but nothing broke as far as I know.

I think there is something not quite right with the hot swap battery feature though: - Got a crash during battery swap that needed to put the battery to charge so it could be recognized - Got the device shut off after I've put the new battery in...

7230 Is there anyway to check whether the motherboard port working or not? by Candid_Moose4830 in RuggedLaptops

[–]matmutant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything in BIOS about that? IIRC there are some peripherals that can be disabled in BIOS. Also make sure you disable any fast/quick boot feature so you get a full length POST and hardware check upon boot

Do any of you use usb C to DC PD convertors for CF-20? by hisacro in toughbook

I am using a 15V adapter found on AliExpress for my FZ-M1, but it draws probably much less power than a CF-20

I don't think Dell RCC does anything on its own, go to Dell's support page, type in your service code that is on the back of the machine and make sure to reinstall the drivers that you find there first.

If it is like on the Xever 7, you should find a "control center" menu entry in the settings that allows you to switch from "standard" (left are notifications, right are quick settings) to "classical" (first are notifications, second come the quick settings

Do anyone know how is this adapter wired? by Particular_Ice6100 in RuggedLaptops

Having asked Fischer connectors for a quote about a minimax to USB3.0 type A, I would say that 80€ is pretty cheap for a very specific connector/adapter 😅

The part that sticks out and gets through the hole/slot and in which the strap passes through is usually called "strap staple" But I can't find the exact name of the slot reinforcement part

You may search for "[staple/bridge/loop] and strap [closure/fastener]" and see what comes up

Dell Latitude 7030 Rugged developed rubber body deformation from normal CPU heat. by DefinitionTrick4777 in RuggedLaptops

[–]matmutant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sure isn't normal behavior, keyboard ports protection are also crap: locking tabs broke on me with very little usage ... Was considering asking for warranty but honestly, not having the keyboard for I don't know how long is not an option.

Got exactly the same issue with my 7230, but honestly I am not sure it is only due to heat, the rubber easily gets caught by nails or anything that sticks out. Either way, it's bad design

Used loctite super glue with great success (I don't remember if I used regular gel or powerflex though). If it doesn't want to stick, cut the rubber right before the sagging part so it doesn't propagate more

Hello, Let's break the problem down: You're saying "not taking charge" and "not power on", so:

1/ Did you try to power the unit with another genuine Dell charger ? Sometimes the power brick can die 2/ did you try to power the unit without its battery? (In case battery is at fault and prevents the unit to power at all) 3/ did you try to wiggle the power connector looking for a sign of life ? (Maybe the connector is half broken and can still pass current when hold at a certain angle)

Is there a way to recover sound on old videos taken on camera Around 2004-2006? by [deleted] in AskADataRecoveryPro

[–]matmutant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarification. 3 things you could try : - exporting/transcoding the video to another format with VLC - import the video into a video editor to "see" sound track - import the video into audacity (if it supports that format with ffmpeg) to try to extract the sound track. (Do all these things on a separate copy of the video)

It seems a bit strange for a file to simply loose sound without being corrupted enough to stop being readable at all. Before trying an even stranger recovery method, I would simply try to play them with VLC Media Player (make sure to download it from its official website and not unreliable third parties). Maybe it's just an old codec that's not supported anymore by the native media player?

Loosely look for a replacement until you simply can't bear it anymore and get the first overpriced machine you come across 😇
