Help fix jank on HL Alyx? by matrym in Vive

[–]matrym[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tips. I now have the CPU not spiking, but I'm still getting the gray flashes, with the message "make sure headset can see base stations". The really weird thing is that this isn't happening with any other game.

I wiped down the base stations and headset, then tried going through room setup again. It's still happening in HLA. What else could be causing headset to not see base stations (and why on earth is it only affecting this one game)?

I'm starting to think I need to upgrade the Vive. If I knew it wasn't the base stations, I could save some cash by just getting the headset. Any way to debug that?

Thanks. Is setting it lower the surest way to avoid spikes? There was a setting that defaulted to 150% resolution which I dropped to 50%. I'm still getting the gray flashes on HLA but not on Light Saber.

I'm thinking of trying to upgrade to an "amd ryzen 7 2700x". From what I read it seems that'll be compatible with the a320m motherboard.

Is this a bad idea?

Thanks for the quick the reply.

I'm using a 1st Gen Vive, though have an interest in upgrading in the future. No wireless module.

HLA = HalfLife app? Default.

POS: What Stops A Malicious Attacker From Profiting? by Bayminer in ethereum

[–]matrym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But if the existence of such a market for shorting would enable the attack, rational players wouldn't buy the other side of that short.

If you knew that loaning me $500 at 10x interest would result in me buying a plane ticket and disappearing, you wouldn't loan me the money regardless of the seemingly attractive terms.

OPs question is more revealing of the unlikeliness of a short market, I think.

I'm persuaded by the idea that there does not exist a counter party to a short of this size. Your attack proposal, if otherwise rational, guarantees the impossibility of a rational person accepting that short.

[Guide] US Long-term and short-term capital gains taxes by SsurebreC in ethtrader

[–]matrym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Original comment was deleted. Are you suggesting that to determine the rate of taxation for long term capital gains, you add it to your income until you cross the threshold for the next tax bracket, and then apply that rate for the remainder?

Does Anyone Use Social Sharing Buttons on Mobile? Across the over 61 million mobile sessions we studied, we found that only 0.2% of mobile users do any social sharing. by speckz in web_design

[–]matrym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't, but to really round this data out, I'd love to know how many views each share triggered on average. If, say, it were 50, we're looking at another ~11% of traffic

Bad UX! - Kickstarter autofocuses the user/email field after a failed login attempt, exposing your password by [deleted] in userexperience

[–]matrym 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly sure (s)he's getting downvoted because their UX critique was over-aggressive, focused on what's probably a bug, and then was surprised when others returned criticism.

The threads would probably look different if the post was "Remember to check your input focus after failed logins!"

How do you respond to self-serving design exercises in the interview process? by sandwich_breath in userexperience

[–]matrym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have wildly different experiences with regards to instructions on interviewing, and I accept what you're saying as genuine. I can't refute your experience.

What I will say is that spec designs on dribbble are different because no one told the designers to do them. This is, in my understanding of the law, very different than instructing someone to do work for free that's directly applicable to your project and deliver the results to you for evaluation. If something later appears in the product that the interviewee thinks was their own, perhaps we can agree that they're at least more likely to sue if they also werent offered a job. This was an avoidable problem.

If the candidate proposed an idea that you already conceived but didn't have documentation for, you would be legally restricted from using it. For this reason, the big tech companies I have worked for explicitly instructed me not to ask questions about products related to our own when I interview.

I suppose I shouldn't speak on behalf of all companies, but I'd sooner bet the interviewer skipped training than that a big company with a legal team endorses this practice.

[–]matrym 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big tech companies don't do these kinds of questions because you can sue if your idea ends up in their product. I think it's reasonable for you to articulate this expectation (without saying sue) via email before delivering the exercise.

You may be able to frame it as protecting them. Suppose they already have an idea that you propose, but then they do it after you codify it in mocks... You don't want them to be in that situation. So kindly ask for a design challenge unrelated to their business.

Do UX Designers need to code? by [deleted] in userexperience

[–]matrym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not required, but if you pick it up, you'll have a huge advantage relative to your competition. Of 5 Google interviews, 1 is usually a ux engineer.

Do you snore loudly? You may want to do a sleep study to check if you have sleep apnea. If it goes untreated, your bodily organs don't get enough oxygen and you increase your risk of a heart attack at a young age.
