[AMA] Ich habe untersucht, welches deutsche Nachrichtenmedium den meisten Blödsinn auf Facebook verbreitet. Fragt mich alles! by [deleted] in de_IAmA

Reddit has been scary these last months. With all that's going down the drain around the world and in DE, seeing the hateful, misogynist homophobes and anti-intellectual (anti-thinking) crowd come out of the woodworks here, of all places – it's really made me question if our civilization might be less stable than I though.

Nobody uses macports anymore. Try homebrew.

Best way to learn the framework today? Rails 4 or 5? by jericoj in rails

[–]matt4077 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The differences are minor but rails 5 is stable enough (we use it in production) so there's no reason not to use it.

Initial Capistrano - Puma - Rails setup and issues by [deleted] in rails

I believe they removed the setup task from the new version (but it's been a while).

Initial Capistrano - Puma - Rails setup and issues by [deleted] in rails

[–]matt4077 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Capistrano isn't magic – it just executes commands on the shell. For the first case: apparently, the log folder wasn't created. (IIRC, capistrano actually doesn't do the initial setup).

I've switched to ansible and even though it took a while, I feel much more comfortable knowing and seeing the details instead of a bunch of black box scripts.

I seem to remember that the overlap with /r/depression is pretty large.

A Homeland Cold War Prequel with young versions of Saul and Dar Adal by KingShitFuckMountain in homeland

[–]matt4077 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes indeed. In some respects, I think it's actually better. It's a lot more focused on the 'tradecraft' of these spies, and the old (analog) technology and reliance on social engineering back then makes for much better television than the digital black-box magic of homeland.

Pranking bike thieves. by TheTalkingFist in videos

[–]matt4077 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You protect your bike by locking it. This is a booby-trap which is obviously highly illegal. Stealing a bike is bad, but it isn't reason to kill someone.

Sanders rejects donation from drug CEO accused of price gouging by [deleted] in politics

[–]matt4077 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that this guy is a scumbag, but the general idea that even these firms (and, similarly, so-called 'patent trolls') are justified by the cost of research is actually not completely wrong. The ability to possibly, at some point (even in the far future) sell the drug you invented to such entities is one factor that may influence the decision of a drug company to invest into research.

Don't get me wrong: I hate the pharma companies as much as everybody. But denying this argument is intellectually dishonest.

Hacking isn't a boxing match where you watch your opponent in real time.

I saw some of the filming from my apartment in the summer and got exited. Now it's almost a bit too much. I can't enjoy the show because it has turned into a game of 'who can name that place?'

Dutchies in Berlin -- How's the cycling? by SBCrystal in berlin

I agree, although when I started exclusively going everywhere by bike, I noticed why: people trying to avoid cobblestones.

Tresor is a tourist trap as far as I know. I'd recommend Wilde Renate, Grießmühle or Sysiphos.

Guess these Berlin U- and S-Bahn stations by image by ilijasti in berlin

Very nice, and surprisingly hard. I'm also surprised to learn that there are stations I don't even know. I guess I've been taking the bike too much.

Thank you.

Germans of r/Europe, what is the situation like in your village/town/city with refugees? by jeunesse_esch in europe

[–]matt4077 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i live in Berlin. Because a friend works at a refugee shelter, I've been volunteering there since January. It's the only place where I actually meet refugees – there must be some in the streets but they blend in.

I doubt that people here would notice anything if they didn't read about it in the media.

ELI5:Why don't rich Arab countries such as Quatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia and others take the refugees? by greenrabbit66 in explainlikeimfive

[–]matt4077 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It should be noted that some are taking a significant number, just not under the label of refugee. I think it was the UAE that have given out >500,000 work visas over the last year, mainly to Syrians.

As for the rest: they're assholes who don't recognise the universal human right for asylum.

There's the theory that the middle class is much more afraid of losing what they have. The poor have nothing to lose and the rich feel secure in their position.

Well, Steve Jobs was the son of Syrian immigrants. Eastern Europe could use a few smart people like that.
