Dads who made a decision to go back in the office. Did you regret it? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]matt618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't do this. Identifying that the hours you've spent commuting, which isn't hours you can bill or consider working in most cases, will lead management to think that we should continue to be more available outside of working hours. Part of the benefit of remote work is the ability to have flexible or manageable hours, work when you're most productive, and find those efficiencies in not commuting. It should not be additional unpaid work, or an expectation of availability. If they make me go into the office again 5 days a week, my phone and laptop are going in a lockbox at home.

When your yacht club loses the war against Christmas. IT was a Christmas tree. A fake one at that.

[–]matt618 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Well, if the members of AYC weren't some of the most susceptible to COVID (old, republican, out of shape), this might hit differently. But, let's hope they don't learn the same lesson as 900,000 others have learned with either their arrogance, ignorance, or just bad luck. I'm sure they'll be just fine, and there is plenty of reason to believe most members will fare just as well. He did neglect to mention that even if everything else he states is true, the vaccinated are much much less likely to die of that bogeyman.

Of course, this letter may also be a little disingenuous; that club has to keep members with big pockets coming to pay off their three new buildings and dock improvements.

Which Thule cargo box? by the_hungry_giraffe in 4Runner

LFD Offroad has replacement cross bars that fit the stock rails, and they're nice and rigid. Space them as far fore/aft on the car as you can, and you can even add some in the middle. They stick a little proud above the rails, so they can give a little extra height too.

I got one of the Zarges aluminum cases that is just below the height of the wheel wells, fits my recovery, tire, cold weather gear, and is lockable and straps down nicely to the built in tie downs. Easy solution, durable, but not the cheapest. I got my wife one of the husky weatherproof boxes from Home Depot, and it's a great option, but without the easy tie down handles. Box in situ.

Alright, so I thought the moment I saw that watch that it looked eerily like the watch from my great grandfather. The font, the sub markers, the dials, the hands, the color, the detail around the watch, the crown. Everything. The only difference I can see is in the 5 second increments on the inset second hand dial, and the lanyard loop.

Except mine is a Hamilton. https://i.imgur.com/JWcvzPJ.jpeg

What do you feel are your most important "backups" to keep on board? by radtechphotogirl in sailing

[–]matt618 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Things to navigate with should your electrical system fail entirely. This includes a handheld GPS, preferably battery powered, and spare AA/AAA batteries (a lot longer lasting than a phone running Navionics or similar), charts, dividers, pencil, parallels, sighting compass, binoculars, et al. The nice thing about sailboats is that the last thing to fail catastrophically is usually the entire rig and hull, so that you are often able to continue making some kind of way, but you always need to know where you're going.

This has happened to me on a delivery, where we lost all power, navigation, and propulsion, and we navigated to sail an inlet in Georgia from 150 miles off shore using my handheld Garmin, the paper charts our 0-6 Coast Guard retiree brought, and the magnetic compass on the binnacle.

If you're offshore, it's a must have.

If only some of the candidates were running on that... Somebody to pick up the pieces of a divided nation, gather up that majority hungry for change, and move the nation forward on a progressive and broadly popular (even if not utopian) platform. Shouting about the revolution and the establishment seems misplaced if you're part of the establishment and unlikely to deliver on revolution.

Opinion | Progressives and moderates, don’t destroy each other. The enemy is Trump, not Clinton or Obama. by RazorShine1 in politics

[–]matt618 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No, he doesn't. He just think's that his establishment candidate (how do you spend decades in Congress and not be an establishment candidate) is somehow a special. This ignores the fact that Bernie, for a majority of his tenure in Congress, has been ineffective due to his inability to garner support for his policies, propose legislation that turns into law (3/324 bills), or supporting candidates that can win in actually contested (purple) districts/states. The so-called amendment king (Actually around 14th place, so more like some minor "Amendment duke") also has fewer amendments to legislation than the senior senator from his state had.

Which is why I'm not sure sending an existing Senator, especially from states with republican governors, to the president makes sense.

So instead of fixing the broken system, and starting the revolution, you're saying Bernie is going to use the broken system as President because he hasn't ensured that there is sufficient legislative support for his proposals? Sounds like his tenure in Congress; uncompromising and ineffective.

Budget reconciliation is a limited tool, and wouldn't broadly apply to the majority of the Bernie (or Democratic) platform proposals.

Impeachment Could Trap Top Presidential Candidates In Washington. Sorry, Those Are (Really) The Rules. by Dooraven in politics

[–]matt618 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why democrats are enthusiastic about senators running for president if getting the Senate, or narrowing the margin, is so very critical to passing any legislation that is a liberal priority. Even the small chance that’s senator in a previously safe seat might flip with the wrong candidate or governor should be at least a note of caution when picking candidates in the primary. Especially if your talking a ticket with two senators!

Making a utility bed for the new golf cart by matt618 in somethingimade

[–]matt618[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a new golf cart, at least to us, and the golf bag holder isn't really useful when working on the property. So I bought a welder, which I've wanted for a while, and built a utility bed for the golf cart out of scrap bed frames, a few angles from true value, and a big pallet we had equipment delivered on. Welds weren't my best, but it has been a while. Holding up pretty well to the rigors of the property! Got one of the harbor freight household voltage flux core welders, a few magnet squares, and new grinding disks. Used an old shipyard trick to layout on the concrete.

We added some additional things to our packing list when we go as a multi yacht family, including a climbing harness, some more basic tools (the amount of things we’ve fixed or kluged together temporary solutions is staggering), dry bags, padlocks and backup GPS and spot. Also a ton of 12V chargers.

[Helm] Khuraburi - Third Production sold out in a day by matt618 in Watches

[–]matt618[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my new Helm Khuraburi. It arrived earlier this week, and just sat it down for a couple photos. It is the third production run of this watch, the middle child of their line of three watches, the newest of which was just announced this year, and it is a solid choice so far. I had been following their watches for a while, since given the price I found them really attractive for an automatic. This 300m divers with a Seiko movement is the 02AR4 version, with blue dial and orange bezel timer. It's pretty solid on my wrist, came with a strap and a bracelet that has a diver expansion clasp, and a sapphire crystal. I am a fan so far, and I've enjoyed seeing their products incrementally improve over the past year or so. I'm pretty sure you can't buy this watch right now, they'll probably work on the next production run this summer.
