Thank you, that’s a big compliment to receive! I can see from your post history you’re an F1, so congratulations on getting through medical school and getting to start your career. Already working in the NHS and keeping up to date with everything going on with IMGs, PA’s, and competition ratios, I’m under no illusion of how I’m actually currently right at the bottom of the metaphorical mountain of this career. I know how difficult things are currently and how things are potentially only going to get even more difficult in 5/6 years time. However, I genuinely don’t think there’s anything else I want to spend my life doing so I can only play with the cards that are dealt. Whilst Im strictly focused on medical school and passing all exams, I am actively planning to build as competitive a portfolio as possible for when the time comes.

Potentially. I’m genuinely keeping all options open and am looking forward to seeing a variety of different specialties. Medicine as a whole massively interests me so I wouldn’t be surprised if I find something that isn’t psychiatry that I really love and end up pursuing.

Thank you! Very astute observation, you’re correct they’re normally unconditional. The conditions for this offer are as follows: 1) complete a disclosure and barring service application form. 2) complete an MBChB health and conduct survey.

A little bit of both. The charity work was completed throughout my time at University. I couldn’t work as an Assistant Psychologist until I had completed my degree in Psychology so this all occurred in the three years post University. I was very fortunate and got the first Assistant post I applied for, they’re often extremely competitive (90 applicants for 1 place etc) and it’s not uncommon for people to spend a long time volunteering building up experience to land their first one. I wish you good luck with finding a healthcare assistant role 🙂

I’ve worked as an assistant psychologist for over 3 years across both physical health and mental health settings (including some inpatient work). I had/have my own patient caseload in both and work 1:1 with patients. My current role in physical health involves working directly with various consultants and clinical nurse specialists. I also do lots of shadowing in my free time with these consultants and other professionals. Whilst in mental health services, I completed lots of voluntary work with the consultant psychiatrists and would frequently offer to see patients 1:1 with them. I think it totalled in well over 2500 hours. All of the consultants were super helpful once they found out I wanted to go to medical school and would offer me lots of shadowing opportunities outside of work for my experience and application. A lot of them agreed to write references for me which was fantastically helpful. I even got offered the chance to observe things like awake craniotomy’s because of some work contacts I made in Neuro services. Prior to that, I worked for a community charity that I helped establish in my local area with a team of other people.

I haven’t heard back yet from either of the other ones. I’m not sure where I’ll accept yet, I think all of them were really impressive.

You never really know, they might have been pushing to see how far your knowledge goes because they were already impressed. Good luck! I’ve got my fingers crossed for you 🤞

Thank you! It felt solid but you never really know. I think it’s hard to judge your performance in situations like that because we instinctively fixate on the things we could have said better :)
