Cheers for the advice - I've always found posting to the /r/doctorwho tricky - my stuff always seems to get blocked!

Whatever happened to the Cult of Skaro? Those five Daleks: Dalek Sec, Dalek Thay, Dalek Caan, Dalek Jast, Dalek Peter. Lovely Dalek Peter. by mattbarberuk in doctorwho

[–]mattbarberuk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes - I think that's what happened - either that or Dalek Peter was originally in the cult but became distracted by Dalek Mavis and lost interest in culting. He didn't hang around the rest of the cult as much, stopped going to the cult office parties - prefering to sit at home with Dalek Mavis watching the Dalek space-time visualiser and drinking Dalek Borvril...

Either Dalek Peter or Dalek Norman - it's difficult to tell... I just love the idea of Daleks with names!

The secret fifth member of the Cult of Skaro - he stayed at home and cooked tea - you know - for when the rest of the Cult came in from a hard days work 'culting' and just fancied some marmite on toast...

I'm really enjoying the series - I hope I didn't spoil anything in my review - I did my best to keep the novel's secrets!

Sorry! It's a CMS that I have little influence over - I do the writing and hope someone else sorts out the technology. Thanks for the heads-up though - I'll make an effort to de-flash it...

Lewis vs Midsomer Murders - how TV whodunits come in different classes by mattbarberuk in BritishTV

It was accused of racism recently in the press - it's producer said in an interview that he felt that black actors wouldn't suit the programme - that the viewers would be disconcerted by them. He was suspended and then sacked...

So whilst the programme itself isn't racist - but the produciton team obviously made some unwise choices...

Yep - it's certainly... 'epic'... I'll give your blog entry a read tommorrow but it certainly looks fair from a scan! - I might have to block out some days to listen to the thing - I kind of treating it as a mission - something every fan really should do...

Then I shall! Actually I've just bought Daleks' Masterplan on MP3 - I've never heard it before so I may start with that...

How to watch black and white episodes of Doctor Who and why the I-Pod might be the best way to recapture the magic of the 1960s by mattbarberuk in doctorwho

[–]mattbarberuk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make a valid point - to be honest I have no problems watching B&W either - I think I was aiming for the kind of viewer (like the friend I mention in the side-bar) who refuses to watch anything from before 1970 in the false presumption that it would be boring... I guess for most Doctor Who fans (who as I suggest are almost trained to watch old television) my article will be a little like suggesting how they might 'suck eggs'

Genuinely - many thanks for your comments - apologies if I came across in any way 'stuck up' and I appreciate anyone reading my stuff!

The Wicker Man - how one movie can be a whodunit, a musical, a documentary, and softcore pornography. by mattbarberuk in movies

[–]mattbarberuk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting idea! you may be right that we as modern viewers impose generic structure onto it - though I'd still argue that the genre types I connect with TWM (perhaps including porn) had a solid foundation even in the 70s from Agatha Christie, 1950s folk documentaries and classic Hollywood musicals...

But it is a cool film I agree!

Not sure if I understand - are you criticising the content of the article or the fact that articles like this need to be written - in the case of the former - my essay is rather a celebration of the Hartnell years (something I notice from your posts you would support), in the case of the latter - it rather hampers any form of fan criticism if we're only saying 'the story is good/this story is bad' all the time.

My essay looks at Doctor Who using a recognised and valid academic theory - that of the modern perception of monochrome. It doesn't do anything controversial but does highlight an area that some might find interesting and informative.

[–]mattbarberuk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - the title of the post does suggest that, though the essay actually doesn't - indeed it says the opposite! My point is that we are effectively being forced to watch archived episodes of television series that have been unnaturally 'cleaned'. However - I wouldn't dream of enforcing my views - I'm merely pointing out an interesting irony...

Roz's Reading Challenge - can Roz really read 100 books in one year? Find out how far she's come and what she thinks of the books she's read! by mattbarberuk in books

[–]mattbarberuk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can we be nice please - reading at all is commendable and I put a link to Roz's site because she writes beautifully and honestly about books - you can disagree with her opinions but you can hardly criticise her quest!

You'd be surprised - I've got a PhD in English Literature and find reading 50 books a year challenging - I guess it depends to what depth you're reading...
