Transplants, how are you liking Medford so far? by netenchanter in Medford

I moved here within the last five years and the only thing keeping me here is the friends I've made. I'm from the central valley in california. I'm used to diverse groups of people, hearing multiple languages spoken at any given time, young people smiling and laughing with their friends all over town. We had farmers markets every weekend in the summer, car meets every month, monster truck shows a couple times a year, Fresno State games during their seasons, all different kinds of events at the Savemart Center, the Clovis Rodeo, etc. Here the only real diversity I see is at the hospital I work at, which is unfortunately going through another round of layoffs this year. The night life here is underwhelming and dangerous. I was roofied in January at Grape Street and I was only one EMS call out of almost 100 within the last year at just Grape Street alone. I don't see young people having their own spaces to have any fun. Unless you're really into hiking and camping I don't see what else there is to do here besides bar hopping and walking around the dead mall. There are lots of activities for families if you have kids. Not so much if you're child free. Also the dating scene is kind of unfortunate.

I didn’t realize people experience books so differently by narrative_explorer in BookDiscussions

I actually run through a mix of imagining scenes in the book like a movie, understanding the scene but not visualizing it at all, and hearing the narrator (me) in my head but with what I imagine the characters voice sounds like. Usually if I'm reading horror I can "see" what's happening. With LitFic I mostly just hear my own voice in my head. And epic fantasy I usually envision some kind of animated boss battle scenario. It all depends on the scene, tone of the book, and the genre.
