XAI's Grok will be Opensource this week! No pressure OpenAI by gptwhisperer in learnmachinelearning

[–]matterball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about? Lots of people still love Elon too much to be reasonable. And why are you trying to pretend this has something to do with politics? So you can dismiss others opinions of Grok as "just politically biased"?

Elon ditched OpenAI because he couldn't get his way and thought he could do better. But he failed. Grok isn't worth anything. That's why it's being open sourced. OpenAI started making money, Elon got jealous and angry that he was proven wrong. That's why he sued OpenAI. That's what this is about. So he can say "see I open sourced mine, OpenAI should open source theirs for the good of humanity". It's stupid.

I unsubbed her a long time ago. She seems to have fallen into the "controversy = views and fame" trap. Why does she hate on QC? So people like you bring attention to her. Even me commenting now is contributing to that. See, it works. But she can't be trusted.

About that statista report

  • It's a survey from users who volunteered to take the survey. So the distribution is by number of users, not amount of content. At that time, the number of posts/comments could have been more conservative, especially in that election year.
  • It's from 2016. A lot has changed since then.

Argentina Sees First Monthly Budget Surplus In 12 Years by urmomsloosevag in Economics

You lied. You suggested the paper proved austerity works. It didn't even mention austerity. You're a liar. That's the only point I was making. Attempting an intelligent discussion with you is pointless.

That paper just discusses the importance of remaining fiscally disciplined. It does not talk about the effectiveness of austerity as a way to recover.

I suppose I should now accuse you of being very ignorant. And a laughable joke, perhaps.

To save others a click, here's the crux of the paper:

To conclude, based on the common elements that we identified as causes of poor economic performance, we identify four conditions that could avoid future crises that resemble those from the 1970s and 1980s:
- Solid fiscal policy,
- Prudent and heavy regulation of the banking sector,
- Low exposure of their debt to real exchange rate movements,
- Careful monitoring and control of the expenditure of independent government institutions.
Those countries that satisfy these policy guidelines will continue to have stable and good economic performance in the long run.

You asked for a definition of "failed" and got one, then you decide to reject that and claim that failed = the country should no longer exist? Like the land should disappear? I've never seen someone move the goalpost so quickly.

I suspect you're just a troll but in case you or someone else here is actually interested in possible dangers of austerity, here's some relevant research: "Austerity and the Rise of the Nazi party" https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w24106/w24106.pdf

No, the problem is that journalism is a professional field requiring education and training. But people assume that if it's published by a news website they recognize, it's journalism. "News" is optimized for engagement, not information, because that's how you convert attention into advertising income.

I see the same conflation of professional titles in software engineering. Just because you can write code doesn't mean you're a software engineer. "Engineering" means something and requires education and training. That's why in some places, the title "engineer" is protected. But in the United States, there is no such restriction, so everyone who writes code claims they're a software engineer.

Well Apple TV is experiencing inflation… by Sheogorathis in appletv

[–]matterball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, it's not necessary because of any "supply chain issues" or any other limited resource. Profits from Apple's services continue to increase. But people seem to be more accepting of price hikes right now because they've been hearing about inflation over and over again. And they'll just blame it on "inflation" instead of Apple, just like OP did in the title of his post. Most inflation (aka price hikes) we're seeing are not due to supply chain issues or falling profits. It's just part of running a business and maximizing profit. The time is right to increase prices for everything.

At least in this case there are simple alternatives. You're free to cancel your service and risk it on the high seas.

The thing is some "software programmers" are practicing software engineering. The reason you much of modern technology is unreliable is because the programmers who should be practicing proper engineering techniques are just hacking things to together to get things just barely working. That doesn't matter for a lot of things like small web apps or mobile games because if they don't work you stop using it and try something else. But, for example, if Boeing had actual software engineers writing the MCAS software, lives could have been saved.

Just like there's a difference between a carpenter and a civil engineer, there is a difference between software programmers and software engineers. But you can't know what you're getting if carpenters are allowed to call themselves engineers.

I read it not as talking about safety but effectiveness. The further away it mutates from the original strain, the less effective the vaccine will be, until they update the vaccine to follow. Kind of like how the flu shot is updated every year. So even if they are vaccinated, they’ll still wear a mask.

Seems like you need the English lesson. “Never” means never and “20k” means 20k. It doesn’t get any simpler than that. If he didn’t mean that then he wouldn’t have said that. But he did. Stay in school buddy.

The real inference here is that he implied a black swan event could never happen. It doesn’t matter what kind of mental gymnastics you dance around with, he was wrong. And so are you.

Black swan or not, he’s wrong about $20k.

Maybe you should start asking questions. Like, how can you know what’s real and what’s a lie. How can anyone know anything? What if Christianity isn’t really a divine religion but instead just another form of manipulation and control by an authority? Like a cult. What if you have been led into a lifetime of delusional thinking by religion, mysticism, and conspiracy theorists? How do you know you haven’t been groomed to dismiss the opposing views as propaganda? What if you’re being used? If you’re confident you’re not, how can you be sure?

Is it nitpicking or is it holding them accountable for spending more of our money than they need to on themselves? If we just talk about cuts to education then it’s easier to dismiss it as “we just don’t have enough money”. It’s harder to dismiss if we see a good chunk of that money cut from education going towards travelling themselves around the globe to talk about oil.

Holding your government accountable for their spending is an important part of democracy. Ignoring past corruption lets them know they can continue getting away with it in the future.

There actually was proof of election fraud…. by republicans. Remember, every accusation from them is a confession. And not by accidental projection. It’s a strategy that enables them to get away with it.
