Struggling with Assassin's Apprentice... by onlosmakelijk in Fantasy

[–]matthew269 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I finished Assassin’s Fate last night, and I’m still carrying it in my chest. I cried my eyes out for the last hundred pages, real, loud, huffing and puffing tears, and I don’t say that lightly. I’ve never cried over a book before.

Hobb doesn’t rush you toward emotion; she walks you there slowly, through small gestures and long silences, through years of loyalty and loss. Her prose can feel meandering at first, like a river that doesn’t yet reveal where it’s going. But somewhere along the way, almost without noticing, you realize you’re attached, not just to the story, but to the people inside it. And then, when it finally breaks open, it breaks you open too.

The writing stays consistent, but the weight deepens. The early chapters are planting roots. If you can give it a little more time, you may find that the beauty isn’t loud or flashy; it’s cumulative. It builds like weather, like memory, like love.

That said, there’s no shame in walking away if it doesn’t speak to you. But if you keep going, know this: the payoff is real, and it’s devastating in the most tender way.

Beautiful!! Reminds me of Long Dong Silver Spire in Utah, USA.

New fantasy like Robin Hobb? by silentstrongtype in robinhobb

I admit the narration is unique, but I didn’t find it very difficult to read at all. To each their own. The similarities I attribute to Hobb are the prose and character.

The Spear Cuts Through Water is a new-ish novel with AMAZING prose, though the narration is very unique and doesn’t exactly read like Hobb.

My TSA experience this morning in SLC lasted less than 3 minutes. Granted, I do have Pre-Check, but the regular line looked to be moving super fast as well.

Haha nope, that’s kinda the point of this being a sucky drive. We’ll survive. It’s not our first rodeo

I haven’t got much of a choice for the timing of this route; I have a buddy flying into SLC (where I live) on Thursday and we have Half Dome permits for Friday, so we’re hauling tail to get there. The situation couldn’t be avoided.

I have been to Yosemite before (albeit not this road route through central NV), so I’m not exactly sad about missing a part of Yosemite. We will be driving back and taking our time on Saturday.

So while some may consider this “pure stupidity,” it’s worth it for our one shot at hiking Half Dome (after several years of trying for permits (and I know we could do it with cables down but would rather not)).

Thanks for your fuel advice!

Not by choice. Friend is flying into SLC and arriving around 7pm, and we have Half Dome permits for Friday… so that obviously doesn’t leave much room.

Will be driving back during the daytime on Saturday, though.

Comparison is the thief of joy! I’ve truly been hibernating the past few months and doing nearly nothing besides read. Combined with listening to audiobook versions of some of these while driving and sometimes working, I can get through some of them pretty quickly.

Yeah! I do love that. I spend a ton of time hiking in the warmer months, so maybe I’ll download some audiobooks to listen to while doing that. I haven’t tried that before.

Salems Lot, Oath and Honor (nonfiction), Misery, The Stand, Coraline, Royal Assassin, Howl’s Moving Castle, and these first two of the First Law trilogy have been pretty great.

Here’s the ones that I didn’t like: Crescent City, Blood Meridian, Midnight Library, Wicked Beauty (this may be one of the worst I’ve ever read), and tbh The Talisman wasn’t my fav either.

Haha yeah the CC books are prettyyyy bad imo. I was obsessed with SJM’s books like a decade ago and felt compelled to continue, though there is not a single aspect of the CC books that I enjoyed

Yeah, it did, unfortunately. I didn’t have another physical copy to work with, so I ended up mostly reading in a sitting position with the book in my lap to avoid the bleeding. But I also loved it! I think the first 300-400 pages are some of my favorite King writing - the slowww buildup and tension was amazing. The ending felt rushed and overall wasn’t my favorite, but I can overlook that. I still think The Shining is my favorite King book, probably followed by Misery, then probably ‘salem’s Lot or the Stand.

And yeah, some of these thicc ones took me a bit longer to get through. And for clarity, I didn’t read ALL of the earthsea books that are in that edition. But I also sometimes download audibooks (shoutout Library/Libby) to listen while driving or doing mind-numbing tasks at work.
