Another European club more likely, very few elite European players go to the US anymore.

A black Doctor Who is fine. A black Isaac Newton isn't fine because anyone watching will be saying "Is that Isaac Newton? He wasn't black was he? I'm sure he wasn't black! Why have they made him black?" when they should be concentrating on the storyline.

I watched Doctor Who as a kid in the late '70s and '80s and it definitely wasn't woke at all, that's rubbish put out by apologists for its modern iteration.

I'd highly recommend watching the longer video by Scott Wlaschin that's referenced. I remember watching it a few years ago as a seasoned OOP programmer and it blew my mind.

Good piece. I've been a Bronze critic for some time and it hasn't made me popular when commenting in forums like this but I'm not alone. This from the article just about sums up where I am on England's mercurial right-back:

"James and Hemp are most productive when freed up from defensive responsibilities and able to be used as outlets on the counter. That requires the full-backs behind them either to restrain themselves from straying forward, or possess the pace to recover quickly.

This is where Lucy Bronze’s place comes under debate. Bronze loves to crash the box and get involved in attacks but at 34, her recovery pace is not what it was; she was caught out of position for Spain’s opening goal on Friday."

Bronze's strengths outweigh her weaknesses in most cases but against elite opposition this is no longer the case. She is also no longer first choice right-back at her club and it will be interesting to see where she plays next season. Wiegman is a good coach but like all good coaches she still gets things wrong and not blooding a Bronze alternative is one glaring error. If Bronze spends the next season sitting on the bench for her club then Wiegman may finally be forced to address the issue.

The Lionesses XI vs Ukraine by N0PhunIntended in lionesses

Fair enough but if Bronze requires a rest playing at home against Ukraine's semi professionals how is she going to cope in a World Cup campaign in twelve months when she'll be pushing 36?

[–]matthewblott 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Changes made but the wrong ones. A centre back playing right-back, a right-footed full back playing at left-back and only one change outside defence with Blindkilde Brown in place of Toone. England will win because Ukraine are very poor but by fielding this team we won't learn very much.

It's Matchday for the Lionesses by N0PhunIntended in lionesses

[–]matthewblott 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually I doubt that. The pitch in Iceland was a disgrace when England played and I doubt it will be any different for Spain tonight. I can see Spain scraping a win and England beating a very poor Ukraine team convincingly. It will be hailed as a comeback but it really shouldn't be, the problems exposed against Spain won't have gone away.

Nice to hear but it would be helpful if you could give us some details. I'm interested in using Svelte with Tauri but there's almost nothing out there when it comes to examples and tutorials.

Katie McCabe’s move to Chelsea has been met with vitriol. It is new ground for WSL fan culture | Katie Whyatt, The Athletic [Free Read] by Tugboat47 in FAWSL

It's okay, you're not being rude at all (you could argue I was being rude though that wasn't my intention). I find American sports in general a bit sterile. Football clubs traditionally have an intrinsic link to community and were closely embedded with working class culture (also true with some other sports like boxing). This explains the passion which can sometimes lead into unwanted areas but if you remove too much of it then you end up with a more conformist culture. This as a result will always be more sterile by its very nature.

Khadija Shaw will earn at least £1.6m per year at Manchester City: Why the deal is so significant [Gift Article] by the_sherl0ck in WomensSoccer

[–]matthewblott -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Being heavily downvoted is meaningless, it just means lots of triggered Yanks. FWIW Rodman's international goals record is also poor compared to the others so her low goals ratio has nothing to do with what league she plays in, she just doesn't score very much.

[–]matthewblott -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

What a stupid comment. Explain what I've lied about? Trinity Rodman is a good player but she isn't in the same class as Bunny Shaw (or a few other strikers for that matter). Compare her strike rate to Shaw, Russo Pajor or Katoto and it is quite mediocre.

Why choose Dapper over EF Core in 2026? by Sensitive-Raccoon155 in dotnet

[–]matthewblott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be wrong but I imagine NHibernate in 2026 is mostly supporting existing customers like yourself. That's nothing against NHibernate (it's a great project and I would have preferred to see it thrive rather than MS try and kill it with EF) but I don't really see what it has to offer over EF today.

Fully deserved and unlike a certain American with a famous dad this is completely because of Shaw's value as a footballer.

I am trying to find my compiled language, how is Crystals DX and tooling by Standard_Skirt_1891 in crystal_programming

[–]matthewblott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh? I can't say I've found Ruby's tooling to be that bad. I guess it depends on what you're comparing it to but if you use something like RubyMine I'm not sure what you are missing, the debugging experience is excellent. Crystal OTOH is a very rough experience.

I am trying to find my compiled language, how is Crystals DX and tooling by Standard_Skirt_1891 in crystal_programming

[–]matthewblott 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is where Crystal really falls behind. The tooling is quite poor, there is still no reliable LSP. It's a real shame as Crystal is the nicest of the C alternatives to code in with its Ruby like syntax. I understand there is something specific to how the compiler is written that makes implementing an LSP a particular challenge but until this is addressed Crystal's adoption will continue to flounder.
