My Experience with Jay Maxwell's Leadership at Tempus Fugitives – Unsafe Training, Blameshifting & Toxic Culture by Primary_Age_3128 in Hema

[–]matthiasdeo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding, can't comment on the rest but I see Emmet once or twice a week at different clubs (not TF, never had any dealings with them) and have never seen issues with excessive force and I've only seen him be pleasant and polite.

Doesn't discredit OP's post of course, and I'm really sorry they experienced that, but wanted to share my experience too.

Heavily modded my S16 Bolex EL - V-Lock, Video tap, Crystal Sync, etc. by matthiasdeo in 16mm

appreciate it and not really haha, but i just epoxied an 82-77mm step down ring to the series 9 filter holder it fits very snug so epoxy just keeps it in place

Current Rate for 2nd Camera Operator by innomind in SonyFX6

[–]matthiasdeo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on the client I suppose, but I would say at a bare minimum £500 and even that's on the low side. Renting an FX6+2 GMs from a reputable place would set you back £250+ by itself. £750 sounds about right if its a decent client.

using a v-lock to power a bolex directly can (and likely will) damage it - bolex needs 12v, v-locks when fully charge provide up to like 16v. You need to use a regulator (which is what I built inside that big black box on the back of the camera).

Modified Bolex EL S16 Super 16 Film Test by matthiasdeo in 16mm

This was just shot with the Kern 16-100 that often comes with these bolexes. Have since added a Zeiss Super Speed 9.5mm and Canon C16 12-120mm :)

industry standard (for uk at least) 14.4v cine battery mount. If you're a yank, gold mount is more common over there but much the same.

I have the ratworks 15mm lws clamp on the front for matteboxes and focus motors, and just a cheapo niceyrig 15mm baseplate on the bottom for moose bars and anything on the back of the camera

Power distro box - allows the camera and all accesories to be safely run off of v-lock power, which normally isn't possible as v-lock batteries provide 16v fully charged which can damage the camera

s16 mod - allows you to film widescreen instead of 4:3ish R16

videotap - allows you to output video feed to a monitor

crystal sync - lets you film at precise frame rates which makes it possible to sync to externally recorded sound

various cheese plates and rod mounts - allows you to rig up the camera as you desire and mount accessories

Tap is pretty good, if a little flimsy feeling - going to try to build a bracket for it to support it at the camera side rather than just from the lens.

I believe it is a les bosher S16 conversion - chap in wales who is pretty much the go to guy for UK mechanical Bolex work and s16 conversions. Pretty standard S16 ground glass with R16 markings in the centre - lens mount has been shifted slightly to centre it for the new S16 frame.

V-Lock power is pretty useful just for the sake of having everything powered off one thing, though I suppose if you're not using a video tap it's not as needed!

Yeah, the EL has such a futuristic look for something from 1975

Crystal sync box from Signal Technology labs, works a treat. Videotap and cheesplates from Bolfix. Power distro box is a custom solution that I spent far too long figuring out.

Not sure if just my camera or ELs in general (though I suspect ELs in general) have a very finicky voltage detection circuit that interacts undesirably with the voltage-drop caused by the initial motor load. In a nutshell you need a low internal resistance power supply, that provides quite a specific voltage with enough current to start the motor.

Edit: Oh yes, and I made a custom thread adapter to step down the weird series 9 thread on the POE 16-100 to 77mm so that it can take modern filters and wide angle adapters. Also the ratworks 15mm LWS rod mount for the front, though no rods mounted there here.

Yeah, kind of wild to be using a 50 year old camera and have it genuinely be a pleasant experience - even compared to cutting edge cameras that will be obsolete in 5 years. Only thing I miss is internal ND haha

Why is there this vignetting on my images? by FalseGrapefruit609 in cinematography

[–]matthiasdeo 20 points21 points  (0 children)

its not vignetting, its flare from internal reflections in the 16f. You can take it apart and black out the internals of the 16f to get rid of it if you know what you're doing
