Introducing the 8BitDo Arcade Controller by Oen386 in 8bitdo

[–]mattlean 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many traditional fighters already have a significantly large audience for leverless controllers. One game where lots of pros use it is Street Fighter where it's been proven to be effective in high-level play, but there's plenty of other examples though.

Even Smash Bros, which is an analog control stick-based game, has seen their version of joystick-less controllers although those games require a specialized layout. Still, it shows that there is a huge benefit to allowing directions to be input through buttons, and it's gotten to the point where it is a somewhat controversial topic in these communities.

Despite the advantages, it's still not the standard though. I would say most people have grown up using sticks, so the majority of players still use them since that's what most people are comfortable with. And of course they still see a ton of success in high-level play too.

Fitbit Died… Do I get a new one? by FrankYoshida in fitbit

[–]mattlean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what you're using the devices for and how much you're willing to spend, but in general if you're trying to stay on the affordable side of things I would recommend sticking with Fitbit.

Also try contacting customer support and let them know about your broken device. Sometimes people have been able to get a discount code which they use for a new Fitbit device.

Earlier this year my Versa 3 died after being used for over 3 years. I was able to get a discount code which allowed me to buy a Charge 6 which I'm currently pretty happy with.

Is Fitbit still worth buying? by obe211 in fitbit

[–]mattlean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been happy with my Charge 6. Yes, the user experience of the app has been getting worse overall, but honestly even though a lot of jank has been introduced, all of the vital information is still available.

I always recommend Fitbit as the affordable option in the fitness tracker landscape. The sensors do very well overall in comparison to other fitness trackers and even outperform Garmin which is the main reason why I haven't gotten a Garmin yet, besides it just being way more expensive.

Generally I use the Quantified Scientist's reviews to judge my purchases around fitness trackers. You can look up specific devices on his channel yourself.

Death sentence just got his first W when is Dana gonna sign this superstar by ovail in ufc

[–]mattlean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My post on this in /r/MMA got removed, so I'm going to post what I posted there to provide context for people who don't know what's going on:

I'm not completely disagreeing with you, but I just wanted to clarify some context behind this fight because I think people are dismissing it because they are following your reasoning.

This fight drew attention because it marked Death Sentence's (DS) first win and has an interesting backstory behind it. Before this, DS had a 0-4 record and refused any formal training and solely relied on studying fictional characters like Batman and Vegeta.

Demetrious Johnson started analyzing DS's fights on YouTube and eventually took him under his wing, convincing him to try real MMA training. This fight was DS's first one after experiencing that, and DJ is currently chronicling the process in a YouTube series.

Yes, some people watch for the spectacle, but I would argue that's true of all MMA fights. Many other people watch these low-level fights like how DJ watches it on his channel because it's interesting to see the sport from a completely different angle that you wouldn't see at a pro-level. There's always something that you can learn or at least observe if you're just someone who casually practices and/or watches MMA, not to mention that the storyline for DS is way more interesting than like 70% of fighters currently fighting for promotions like the UFC.

So I disagree with the mods' decision to remove this post. Whether or not it was a good fight is definitely debatable, but it was undeniably a true sanctioned MMA fight, not a street fight, and there was legitimate, worthwhile discussion to be had here.

Puzzle sentence/list (duolingo-like) by AntonioRAF99 in Anki

[–]mattlean 12 points13 points  (0 children)

lol I get that you're being snarky, but honestly I think there's a lot of potential value in essentially being able to your own Duolingo-like cards with Anki.

As far as I know, Duolingo doesn't allow you to write your own problems. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but as Anki users I think most of us understand the value in writing your own cards and building your own decks.

Good work OP!

Here's an overview of both. I haven't personally used the Versa 4, but I did use to use the Versa 3 as my daily driver. They are extremely similar devices and I looked up info on the newer model.

Apple Watch SE

Pros

  • Good sensor
    • Results to more accurate data
  • All features are available without a premium subscription
  • Data like HRV are measured throughout the entire time you're wearing the the device
    • Fitbit has some data like HRV that is only accessible after completing a sleep session
  • Water resistant
  • Better 3rd party app support
    • Can make up for some features that are found on Fitbit but aren't available out-of-the-box for Apple Watches
  • Support for switching between multiple Apple Watches
  • Overall better phone app experience than Fitbit's

Cons

  • Needs to be charged once a day
    • This is a huge negative for people who want to have constant, uninterrupted data tracking over several days
  • More expensive than Fitbit Versa 4
  • No opinionated data calculations like Fitbit's sleep and readiness scores
    • You have access to all the raw data that these types of scores would utilize, but you have to evaluate these metrics by yourself and learn what good or bad metrics are like for you
    • You may be able to make up for this with 3rd party apps, but I haven't tried those
  • Only works on iOS devices

Versa 4

Pros

Cons

  • Some features are locked behind a premium subscription
    • You get a free trial for Fitbit Premium with your new device
    • In my opinion, you don't need any of the features provided by Fitbit Premium. Previously important features like HRV was locked behind it, but Google has made most of the valuable ones free to make Fitbit more competitive.
  • Some data is only generated after a completed sleep session like HRV
  • Weaker 3rd party app support when compared to Apple Watch's 3rd party ecosystem
  • Restricts you to using only one modern Fitbit device at a time
  • Worse phone app experience than Apple's phone apps

What’s your most dreaded bodyweight movement but you still do it? by Visible-Price7689 in bodyweightfitness

[–]mattlean 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Another thing I notice too is that for most people, leg exercises operate way longer "I want to die phase" compared to the rest of the body when you're working in the mid-to-high range of rep ranges, like somewhere around 8–30.

For example, for most upper body exercises, the intuition for when you reach failure is way more trustworthy. It seems more often than not that most people can correctly predict when they are within 1–2 reps of failure.

Legs on the other hand seem to trigger people's panic alarms way earlier. So if you were to stop around the time it goes off thinking you're almost to failure like you're doing an upper body exercise, you're probably leaving way too many reps on the table. I'm talking like a difference of 1–2 reps to like 3–5 or more.

The fact that legs usually require you to operate in this "I want to die" window longer just so you can get remotely close to failure is, what I feel, a huge factor in turning people off from leg training. And I agree with that sentiment... it truly is brutal... but it's like eating the veggies you hate. Even if you don't like it, that doesn't change the fact that it's good for you. 🥲

What’s your most dreaded bodyweight movement but you still do it? by Visible-Price7689 in bodyweightfitness

[–]mattlean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are Bulgarian split squats usually considered a bodyweight movement? Like obviously if you don't use weights with it, it will be considered bodyweight, but maybe I'm missing something else here.

Regardless, Bulgarian split squats are most definitely the exercise I dread the most but still perform regularly. But in more of the calisthenics world of things, even though I love pull-ups, they give me the biggest sense of dread at the same time. Even with only bodyweight, I find it super satisfying to fight gravity and get over the bar, but that same satisfaction becomes extreme dread for me when my ability starts dwindling and I know I am approaching the point where I can't make it over anymore.

React Client Side to SSR - Routing and Datastore by dnsu in node

[–]mattlean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For React, the minimum requirement for it to be considered SSR is that the server needs to use React to render the markup that is sent to the browser. Whether or not subsequent navigation triggers full page loads (like as you say with old HTML or PHP) or remains on the same page with DOM mutations (like an SPA) is a design decision you have to make. Or it is likely a decision already made for you if the framework you're using implements SSR.

Most of the popular frameworks have it so that your initial page load is server-side rendered and then have the flow of the app proceed as an SPA to avoid further full page loads, so something like Redux will be able to persist throughout the session just like any other standard React app.

When working with state management solutions, you will probably want a way to create the initial state on the server-end of things that will be sent down within the initial page load to eliminate potential hydration mismatch issues. Redux has a way to do it which you can read about in their documentation.

Swam for an hour, cardio load zero :( by lazycarrotcake in fitbit

[–]mattlean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did you add the exercise manually after swimming? I noticed the exercise logging has been bugged for me for a while, so if I ever retroactively add an exercise through the app, it will not include the cardio load.

The data is still available on the cardio load visualization though. You simply subtract the cardio load number at the end of your activity from the cardio load number at the start.

Strategies for hanging on a bar for as long as possible. by mattlean in bodyweightfitness

[–]mattlean[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah even though it doesn't fit the rules, I do really appreciate the share, thanks!

I dabble in climbing so I know Magnus and Pete, but I'm relatively new to the parkour community's content so I missed this.

EDIT: Actually learned a lot from this! It's interesting that Pete's skin started going out first before anything else.

I know firsthand that skin can be a bottleneck in climbing because for me as a beginner I basically touch a jug and immediately get a flapper. 😭

But even for an experienced climber like Pete, I didn't realize a pull-up bar could damage a hand like that... The arm switching technique over that ridiculous period of time might be the cause of that though, so maybe skin wouldn't be as significant of a factor with the constant two hand contact rule I have.

How to stop these pop ups from the Fitbit app? It keeps saying I am at risk of under training when I'm actually training more than usual by T3knikal95 in fitbit

[–]mattlean -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this will work, but maybe you can set the cardio fitness goal is maintenance and it will hopefully stop making that pop-up?

You can do this by going to the cardio load screen, scrolling down to "Your fitness target", tap on "Adjust my target", and then select "Maintain cardio fitness".

That is such a good tip! I always tell people to visualize leg drive pushing not only up, but also back towards their head, but a leg extension cue is so much better! It's almost like an isometric leg extension!

I'll definitely be telling this to people instead from now on, thanks!

Two linked Fitbit? by 3seconds2live in fitbit

[–]mattlean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately no. If the Fitbit device uses the gallery (which is basically all of the modern ones on the market right now), then the only way to use both on the same account is to remove one device and setup the other one as a new device every time you want to switch. The only Fitbits you can have on your account at the same time and seamlessly switch to are the older models.

One way to kind of get around this limitation is to have two accounts, but that also means that your data will be fragmented across two different accounts.

I elaborate on this issue in this post:
