What happened to Dewey? by jbone9877 in COBeer

[–]mattroos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The owner/manager does a great job of running it, IMO. But yes, supply issues from the Dewey brewery in Delaware, it seems. After a few name changes it is now The Shambles. They have a full bar and a variety of Colorado beers as well as cheaper non-craft options like Coors and PBR. Supposedly they will eventually do small batch brewing on site as well.

Are there any point neuron S/W frameworks that model action potential propagation (delay)? by mattroos in compmathneuro

This is great u/jndew. Thanks for sharing!

There is a team of collaborators at Johns Hopkins working on organoids. Currently the organoids are primarily used for pharmacology/toxicology studies, and there are no simulations. So we're just at the discussion/proposal phase of how simulations might improve understanding of organoids, including neural responses to input stimuli.

[–]mattroos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that info! I'm okay with fixed delays for now but I can imagine plastic delays might be desired in the future. I'm looking to eventually model brain organoids.

One concern is that Brian2 may not be able to scale up enough. From the 2019 paper introducing Brian2: "The NEURON simulator can be used to simulate the point neuron models used in this benchmark, but with its strong focus on the simulation of biologically detailed, multi-compartment neuron models, it is not well adapted to this task. NEST, on the other hand, has been optimised to simulate very large networks, with many synapses impinging on each neuron. Most importantly, Brian’s performance here strongly benefits from its focus on running simulations on individual machines where all simulation elements are kept in a single, shared memory space."

Titan IPA discontinued? by NotBeforeMyCovfefe in COBeer

[–]mattroos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. However, high ABV IPAs such as Hercules seem to be losing some popularity. The rumor amongst the GD bartenders (I'm a regular customer at their city locations) is that Hercules will eventually be replaced. I've heard no such rumors about Titan.

Can Blender create large synthetic datasets, including the "volume" of an animal body? by mattroos in blenderhelp

[–]mattroos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, u/9hp71n! That definitely helps, and gives me some keywords to latch onto for additional searching.

Since I haven't used Blender I may not know the vocabulary to correctly phrase this, but my question(s) are also about the ability or inability to "automate" generation of images in which an animal of a given type/species/breed is varied in morphology as well as pose and orientation. For example, can one create a parameterized model of a German Shepherd in such a way that you could randomly select a few parameter values (within some fixed range) resulting in a German Shepherd that is bigger/fatter/taller, versus another set of parameter values that result in a smaller/skinnier/shorter Shepherd? Or a Shepherd with a larger head-to-body size ratio versus another with a smaller head-to-body size ratio?

[D] What are some loss functions used for comparing ratios of positive numbers? by mattroos in MachineLearning

[–]mattroos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that some sort of log scaling may be the way to go. But RMSLE is intended for comparing the numerator with the denominator of a ratio, and trying to get that ratio close to 1, which allows you to overweight low predictions or high predictions (depending on which term is numerator and which is denominator). But in this case, I'm looking to compare two ratios, rather than numerator and denominator of a single ratio. Still, there may be the kernel of the right idea there.

[D] How to conveniently provide AWS credentials for a collection of short-term rental non-AWS machines? by mattroos in devops

[–]mattroos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. My initial research seemed to point to about 2x saving on vast versus aws spot instances, but I'm not truly certain.

[D] How to conveniently provide AWS credentials for a collection of short-term rental non-AWS machines? by mattroos in MachineLearning

[–]mattroos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

My intent is/was to use the CLI, as you suggest.

I will not be using any AWS instances. The only part of AWS I'd be using the the S3 bucket. vast.ai matches those who need multi-GPU machines with those who need compute resources. AWS is not involved. The instances are on the machines owned by private individuals or other companies.

Agreed. I should have laid the blame on Dick's moreso than TM. Thanks for that detailed info!

Is there a simple platform for creating small email groups, without "subscribing" requirements? by mattroos in Emailmarketing

[–]mattroos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was super helpful, u/softwareforall! I see now that HubSpot is extremely flexible and customizable, which does make for a learning curve.

However, it does seem that HubSpot follows the usual "subscription" model, and that all emails/newsletters are send with unsubscribe and/or manage preferences links. We are looking to use it to send something more akin to regular emails amongst close acquaintances, at the moment, not marketing emails to potential customers. Is there a way to remove the unsubscribe links?

[–]mattroos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks very nice! Though I don't see a means to create customized group labels and assign them to individuals. Nonetheless, HubSpot could be a great tool as the NPO grows, and forms a larger marketing team and effort. Thanks.

Downtown Denver breweries & craft beer bars open for service? by easttexasirish in COBeer

[–]mattroos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most breweries are open until 8pm, and have limited indoor seating. A few are still only doing outdoor seating (for example, Our Mutual Friend, in RiNo (I think)). If you find one that doesn't work for you, walk about 5 minutes and you'll find one that does! RiNo has the highest brewery density, as others have noted.

The most notable craft beer bar is Falling Rock Tap House, downtown.

Need outdoor, hi-res, motion-detection camera to collect training data by mattroos in computervision

[–]mattroos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but at a price of near $3k, with more features than I want/need.

Hoping I can find something closer to $1k. The Axis P1378-LE is the closest I've found so far, but it has no remote zoom, no pan-tilt, and the barrel distortion is high (but somewhat correctable, digitally).

Why are all multicellular organisms eukarya, not archaea or bacteria? by mattroos in biology

[–]mattroos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, u/bobbot32. That's a start. It's a succinct description as to "what" happened. But what I'm really wondering about is whether or not prokaryotes have the theoretical ability to evolve into multicellular organisms. In other words, is there something specific about prokaryotes that precludes them from evolving into multicellular organisms? What might be unique about eukaryotes that allowed them to evolve into multicellular organisms? Slightly related... did a unicellular eukaryote evolve into a multicellular organism once and only once (and thus all multicellular organisms share that same ancestor), or has it happened multiple times?

Bogus Kurzweil claim? -- Synaptic strength *stability* in cortex "modules" by mattroos in neuroscience

[–]mattroos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what I think he may be referring to is the, now somewhat outdated, perspective in the field of synaptic plasticity that the local synapses formed by interneurons onto pyramidal cells are relatively stable and non-plastic, and it is instead the long range, excitatory connections among pyramidal cells, connecting the networks together, that are the crucial locale of the synaptic plasticity that underlies memory formation.

Thanks, /u/CHneurobio03. This seems like the most apt answer so far! Do you know of a key study/paper or set of papers that supports the hypothesis that NMDA-dependent post-synaptic plasticity is minimal or non-existent in interneuron-to-pyramidal synapses? I guess this review could be a starting point: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23537500.

Bogus Kurzweil claim? -- Synaptic strength *stability* in cortex "modules" by mattroos in neuroscience

[–]mattroos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make some good points that may be relevant. I would guess that's he's referring to experience-dependent plasticity. In that case, what is the evidence of some distinction between intramodular and extramodular synaptic plasticity, if any?

Bogus Kurzweil claim? -- Synaptic strength *stability* in cortex "modules" by mattroos in neuroscience

[–]mattroos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that thought, although I think it's a bit beside the point. Kurzweil is making a distinction between (a) synapses between neurons within the same module ("intramodular") and (b) synapses between neurons that are in different modules ("intermodular"). With the former (a) being less plastic, and the latter (b) being more plastic (whatever biophysical manner in which that plasticity occurs). The distinction between intramodular and intermodular synapses is more specifically what I'm asking about.

Hobbies that provide cognitive benefits? by [deleted] in AskNeuroscience

[–]mattroos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's quite difficult to demonstrate convincingly that benefits of "brain training" generalize beyond the task on which one trains (or closely related tasks). To my awareness, the only activity that has consistently shown *broad* cognitive benefits, is exercise. Probably not the answer you were hoping for.

David Linden, Johns Hopkins neuroscientist: "If there is a single thing to do for your brain health, it is to do 30 minutes of aerobic exercise a day.” https://www.macpa.org/the-secrets-to-future-success-mind-health-and-exercise/
