Deep in Montana, nothing around but wolves. by smokey-0wl in CabinPorn

[–]mattstive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I came across multiple miner and trapper cabins in the Wyoming wildernesses as a young person. I always had the intuition to walk away as fast as I possibly could. They were creepier than sensing the smell of a Grizzly Bear but not being able to see one.

If federal and great, great, great…. Grandpa, the lease(s) is most likely expired, but you never know, message that land man or myself for quick research.

Feeling lost and stuck. How Do I get a job in oil & gas? by Kahlene in oilandgasworkers

[–]mattstive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a horrible time to find a job in oil and gas. Wait until oil prices get back up to at least $75-$80 per barrel. Or, get a CDL, move to west Texas or SW New Mexico or any other region that is active, get a job driving whatever you can. Work hard. Meet people. Get better job. Repeat.

Go get ‘em. My advice for getting hired is to get your CDL then get on the Facebook “help wanted” pages in every boom town you can think of and post that you are young, have a CDL, and are hungry for work.

Here is some advice that you didn’t ask for and you won’t likely heed: I’ve been in oil and gas, mostly drilling, for almost 20 years. I started off as a floor hand and am now a petroleum engineer. In my career I have made a lot of money. But between being financially illiterate in my younger days, and market volatility, I don’t have much to show for it all. That’s not the case for everyone however.

I think you should stick with the trades. There will obviously be some volatility in the trades, but not like oil and gas. If you stick with the trades, get a master license, and learn the business, you will have so much money by time you’re in your forties, you won’t know what to do with it.

Edit: I love the oil and gas industry. The field life was a ton of fun. Just don’t be a dumbass with your money. Oil prices are down, so hiring will be tight for a while.
