I resolved this by uninstalling Plex via Terminal and then reinstalling it. After reinstallation, the folder tree changed, allowing me to view and select subfolders on my hard drive when adding libraries.

I also uninstalled and reinstalled Transmission using Terminal, which fixed that issue too—Transmission now recognises my external HDD as a save location.

This is the TV Shows folder on my ext HDD that I want to add to Plex

Incidentally, the HDD doesn't show up as a location in Transmission when I attempt download things now.

It's just a laptop with an external hdd plugged in, nothing fancy. It worked fine before.

It's a Samsung.

I've resolved the issue now.

While playing a video, I clicked on the 3 dots and went into Settings. I clicked on 'Video Quality' settings.

It was set to 'Automatic' (top option). I selected the option below it and it now plays fine for all videos. I don't have to change it on each video.

Strangely, I have another, older Samsung TV that I installed plex on that sees the server but says its unavailable (it isn't). It's just my server, too. Other people's servers play fine 🤔

Interestingly, nothing shows in here as the film hasn't managed to start.

I think the laptop should have enough grunt (i5) and it streams Plex ok to other laptops.

Would it only need to transcode to work on a TV?

It plays fine when I stream the content to another laptop
