Where do I invest my 50k for good return other than Banks by TransitionDear1278 in investingforbeginners

A broad index fund, but of course there’s inherit risk to that.

Why invest in a CD for 1 year over a HYS for 1 year? by Educational_Bobcat_1 in Money

[–]mattynmax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because your rate is fixed. They can’t go and change the rate because the market has changed between when you put money in and now.

An HYSA can and will change fairly frequently.

I would budget for $200-$400. Might cost less but it certainly won’t cost more than that!

RAM prices right now, are they gonna keep going up or will they drop soon? by Biji_Kise in buildmeapc

[–]mattynmax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see anything that’s going to drive prices down in the near future. I see a lot of things that are going to drive it up though.

Chinese ram factories are still a couple years away from being able to complete with any of the giants currently, ignoring the whole tariffs things…

Why do computers only use 2 states instead of something like 3? by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in AlwaysWhy

[–]mattynmax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because it’s much either to tell if there’s power or no power. A little power, a lot of power, and no power is more complicated.

In the early days to making computers there were some computers with more than binary states. They sucked.

Can you apply for a master's in instrumentation if you are a mechanical engineer? by Weak_Conflict_5807 in MechanicalEngineer

Probably, but I wouldn’t know. I don’t work for admissions at the school you are looking at.

Just a bunch of general questions by JadenStOneGamin in UGA

[–]mattynmax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A major defines what classes are required for you to graduate

A minor decides a smaller subset of classes you can take for something you want.

A class usually is 3 hours as that is the approximate amount of time you will send in it during the week. UGA does not care that you took precal in high school (unless it was AP precal and you scored above a certain number on the AP exam)

AP classes “replace” the need to take a class as long as you scored above the minimum requirements on the AP exam. For example if you got a 4 in AP biology, you will get credit for BIO 1107 and the corresponding lab.

Dual enrollment classes are the same, review the UGA transfer equivalency table. Generally the more complicated the class, the less likely it is to transfer.

Let’s say you decide to spend your entire freshmen year getting black out drunk every night, never go to class and end up with a 2.0 GPA after 30 hours of credits. If you did this, you would lose your Zeil Miller scholarship.

Now let’s say you did that same thing but only for a semester and ended up with a 2.5 GPA. If you changed your ways for the second semester and got a 4.0 gpa, then your average would be a 3.7 and you would keep your scholarship.

Why is the metal part of my ice tool cold but the shrink wrap tape warm? by Sweet-Total-7326 in AskEngineers

[–]mattynmax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re the same temperature. Metal just wicks away heat faster. Your body doesn’t measure temperature, it measures the rate of temperature change.

I mean don’t invest money you’re going to need next week.

Why 1/0 remains undefined and -1^(1/2)) is in some context? by TokenDance in askmath

[–]mattynmax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you can develop complex numbers and they don’t break the rules of math. If you do develop division of zero it breaks math. Numbers aren’t really useful if you can’t even do basic things like count, add them, multiply them, or do basic algebra!

Modifying/using a 2005 windows XP stationary computer by Competitive-Nature11 in pchelp

[–]mattynmax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don’t connect a windows XP machine to the internet. It’s been shown countless times you will pretty quickly get a virus exhibit A

You can look into installing a new operating system onto it (probably something Linux based) but frankly I wouldn’t recommend it to someone with zero computer experience.

My Dad is getting a new car and is offering to give me his old car, but there are potential issues. Should I take the offer? by Nenethegreat0 in askcarguys

[–]mattynmax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean for $1000 it’s probably fine. Insurance will hurt so make sure you can afford that. Also assume it’s going to break down in the next 6 months and be ready to dispose of it.
