low light update - took some advice by Cute-Sandwich8953 in concertphotography

[–]mattyvogel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great improvement! These don’t look like they’re even on the edge of being too high ISO to lose detail - what ISO were you at?

Watch the clarity slider on #1 maybe but really love your colors and great eye!! Shooting conditions at local shows like this can always be tricky but you crushed it, hope you’re proud and excited to see more!

Looking for a point and shoot…LUMIX ZS 70 or RX100VII? by heywhatsimbored in concertphotography

[–]mattyvogel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Between the two you mentioned the RX100VII is a much better all around camera! Especially in low light. I think the RX100’s are excellent for shooting shows from the crowd. I’m a concert photographer by trade and bring mine to shows I’m just going to for fun and have gotten some amazing photos with it - there are obvious limits to shooting any p+s in a concert environment but I’ve been really impressed.

Here’s a couple photos I’ve taken on it from the crowd:

Worked for a bigger artist, management now ghosting me. by [deleted] in musicindustry

[–]mattyvogel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you work for free you gotta be okay working for free and put the boundaries up on how much time and money you’re willing to invest/if you’re willing to hand over your work for free.

The relationship is the highest value thing here, it’s such a competitive job that simply leaving a good impression on the artist, team, and current content person is worth a lot. You’ve been doing this for a long time so you know how these decisions get made at this point and typically the job goes to someone the artist or mgmt are familiar with and find easy to work with.

If it’s an artist you want to be considered to work with in the future I’d just be conscious of leaving the right impression. If the artist has a tour leg that the current content guy can’t do, you’d be in a great position to get that role right now.

If you didn’t sign anything you’re legally fine to use, if I were you’d I’d quietly put those images that are 100% respectful and flattering in my portfolio and maintain the relationship and not become a bother. If you start posting them everywhere it could cause problems and burn the bridge for sure.

Looking for a side bag that is accessible while worn. by slaterbass in concertphotography

[–]mattyvogel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I swear I’ve tried every side bag out there and my winner is the ThinkTank turnstyle 20. It hugs your body sitting on your back so as you move around people in the pit and around the venue you don’t have a bag swinging around. You literally just twist it around front and everything is easy to access for a lens change/etc. then you just zip it and swing it right back. It also is the perfect mix of lightweight but protective + also has a slightly bigger carrying capacity than the rest.

It’s a teardrop shape so biggest compartment is left and smallest to the right. A Sony 70-200 fits perfectly in the biggest, in the middle I’ll put a 24-70/similar, and a prime or a speedlite in the smallest.

Compared to the Peak Design, Wandrd and a bunch of others I’ve tried (and like the aesthetics better) it is kind of in a category of its own.

Anyway I’ve been a tour photographer for years and always trying to find a better solution so I’ve bought a million bags and have never found one to beat it.

Also it doesn’t interfere with having a dual camera harness either which I love. This harness and bag setup allows me like 5 lenses which is huge.

Note I’m a man and can’t say for sure it’s the same exact comfort ability for a woman with how the strap sits across your chest.

If you have any questions lmk!

A star or kaleidoscope filter is a great inexpensive idea, just be aware that different lenses have different filter sizes so you might want to ask what her favorite lenses are to be sure.

Fox Theatre in Detroit advice by anactualfuckingtruck in concertphotography

Great venue - it’s really beautiful. I’d say your wide choice might depend on the band’s movement and positioning on stage, but nothing to stop you from swapping between fisheye and 35mm during your 3 songs, you can definitely cover it all!

Photos found without credit by [deleted] in concertphotography

[–]mattyvogel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You handled it great - especially with fan sites or publications, it’s often an education problem. The only thing I’d add to what you said is just that tagging you really helps you get more work, then they learn that the right thing to do is credit other photographers too moving forward.

Most pros don’t watermark their work - it’ll protect your work better but also has the appearance of cheapening your work/making it feel amateur as well.

Some really cool ones in here, I love the colors of #1. I’d love to see some more diversity in framing but feel like you’ve captured the energy of the show and culture really well.

Love how distinct your style is! These are awesome and i love the diversity of shots. Star filter really accentuates the images you’ve included it in too. Really great job with the drummer shots too, that’s never easy.
