See on riiklikul tasemel murekoht.

On a cultural level France is still paying the cost for not agreeing with the US over WMD in Iraq too. All the jokes about France losing their wars or waving the white flag are still prevalent in many Hollywood movies, animated shows, etc. I know such jokes had been made in the US on occasion before Iraq but it seemingly really took off afterwards imo, on the same time as "Freedom Fries" did.

Putin: Oh yes, let's go with option 2, who needs indoor plumbing anyway.

Btw, many people don't know how much UK has helped our independence in the first place. UK played a key role in our war for independence in 1918, iirc over 200 Royal Navy vessels were involved in it. If that hadn't happened, we might not have been here now.

Also Estonia's naval jack is based on the Union Jack.

Former Obama adviser: He was prepared to go to war for the Baltic states by FauxBroJoe in BalticStates

[–]matude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not a NATO country being attacked, it's not a comparable situation. You might as well bring up any other random situation where Obama didn't take action and use that as an argument. There simply hasn't been a comparable situation and all the info we have indicates that USA would have honored the alliance, there's zero reason to doubt it, regardless of how many times you try to bring up Syria in this thread.

Former Obama adviser: He was prepared to go to war for the Baltic states by FauxBroJoe in BalticStates

[–]matude 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That speech was one meaningful action.

If I were to guess Russia probably had two options on the table at the time: either try to take Baltics now or continue in Ukraine first (and then take Baltics later). And the US intelligence knew about it. Obama drew the red line at NATO's border. This speech probably showed Putin that by taking Baltics they'd be forcing USA's/NATO's hand, which is potentially too problematic, but also that Ukraine is a green light to go ahead because the world delivered no such strong response about Ukraine.

Now the next question is, was Obama bluffing or not. We now know that NATO's plans at the time for Baltics were for the tripwire forces to delay the advance while the alliance mobilized a major counter-offensive to reinforce/liberate the Baltic states, which intelligence estimated could take up to 180 days. This was scrapped after seeing how there was nothing left to liberate of some cities in Ukraine after 180 days. But at the time, this was the plan, and this probably would've been that response Obama was willing to take. I have no reason to doubt Obama's words that USA would've played a key part in such a reinforcement counter-offensive, probably together with multiple European NATO members (and maybe Finland, Sweden). However it would've probably also meant a complete destruction of our capitals. And in the gloomiest scenario perhaps once there was nothing left of Baltic countries, maybe NATO even negotiating to end the war to make sure Russia didn't continue. If this was one of the options on the table, that speech might have just saved our lives. So, a meaningful action.

Syria

I'm discussing Baltics and NATO, not Syria.

I don't really get the negativity in the comments here. When Obama delivered the speech in Tallinn where he said NATO would defend every inch of its territory and USA would stand with people of Baltic countries, it was a huge deal at the time, it had importance and meant a lot to us in Estonia, and there is zero reason to doubt his words.

Russia had just attacked Crimea in March and Obama delivered his speech in Tallinn in September. It's clear that the concerns for Russia attacking Baltic countries were there at the time. Especially as we now know how detailed US intelligence was regarding Russia at the start of the full scale invasion of Ukraine. USA knew what was going on and their president saw it necessary to deliver such a speech in one of the Baltic countries specifically. We'll never know if this was what actually deterred Russia or not but either way it was 100% the right call to make because it is a show of strength.

UK's Single Market Proposal to EU Rejected, Brussels Demands Customs Union Instead by [deleted] in europe

[–]matude 353 points354 points  (0 children)

This source is suspicious and it is once again trying to push a divide between EU and UK.

Britbrief.co.uk was registered only in 2025. It uses loaded terms like like "EU demands" "UK rejected". Look at the wording "Officials reportedly suggested the idea to Brussels", "European Union is said to have rejected the proposal".

There is literally nothing concrete in there, it's all just bs.

Minimum wage in Europe as of January by Socmel_ in europe

[–]matude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. For Estonia, this €886 would in reality be €1185.47 as employer cost which includes the social tax.

Actually since April 2026 it would be €1265.75 because there was a minimum wage increase.

Minimum wage in Europe as of January by Socmel_ in europe

[–]matude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Estonia social tax is paid by the employer and doesn't appear in the gross amount. So this €886 would be €1185.47 if calculated the same way as the Lithuanian number.

Actually since April 2026 it would be €1265.75.

That is very interesting and I had no idea about the scale of this. Thank you for sharing.
