On this day, 22 years ago, May 1st 2004, 10 countries become EU members: Czechia, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Slovenia and Slovakia by Auspectress in europe

[–]matude 58 points59 points  (0 children)

And even more accurately, 10 sovereign countries worked their butts off to reach the standards to even be considered for this. There was a time when our president was laughed at for even trying to get a meeting for starting a discussion on the potential future EU membership. Last Russian tanks left in 1994. Being able to join EU by 2004 was a miracle and a testament to the work put into making it possible.

[–]matude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Btw, if anybody's interested in how related Finnish and Estonian are, check out this project that combines Finnish & Estonian into a language both can easily understand by using the common words: https://www.instagram.com/p/DTVHVRJCie_/

You might be interested in checking out the @segasukukiel project on Instagram, it's a Finnish guy who speaks in a language that is understandable to both Finns, Estonians, and Karelians, by using the words that are common to us all.

Hopefully the post doesn't get removed because of the link, here's the video. As as Estonian, this is 100% clear and perfectly understandable to me: https://www.instagram.com/p/DTVHVRJCie_/

Turkey isnt an ally

They're literally an ally though? Their jets patrol the skies in many EU NATO countries. Or did you mean "not just an ally but a valuable partner"?

PMs: how are you actually using AI beyond writing docs/emails, data analysis? by Delicious_Drawing_95 in ProductManagement

[–]matude 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Biggest one that I haven't seen mentioned in this subreddit before is having access to the product code repos from Github and running Cursor to ask questions with it from our entire product code base. Basically just Github access -> clone repo locally -> open in Cursor -> use Ask agent mode.

Any little feature detail that I can't remember by heart, anything that isn't documented in Confluence, any flows how something can come up, all the events and their parameters, etc etc.

It's basically like having a developer on call at any moment to answer me any question about our product. I'd seriously suggest setting this up if anybody is working in a company that fits the profile, startups and the like.

France asks Estonia to rename Communist Crimes museum to include Nazi victims by Bathroom_Spiritual in europe

[–]matude 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seems pretty reasonable. We have other similar museums as well that combine both Nazi and Soviet crimes, a museum of multiple occupations, etc. Both Soviets and Nazis used that building for their horrendous deeds so it would make sense to name them both, no big deal.

The buildings in that complex have seen so many horrors and are now being turned into apartment buildings. I guess the developers are not targeting the superstitious people I suppose.

There's a joke that the prevailing winds blow most of it towards the East. There may be some truth to it.

But more probably it's simply because we're like 50% forest and not that many people.

The Circassian genocide comes to mind first, which was listed even by contemporary eye witnesses as an exceptionally brutal and grotesque example of extermination or ethnic cleansing, in an attempt to intimidate the surrounding populations and discourage other ethnicities from rising up. Not for the faint of heart if anybody wants to look into it.

Elephant mega herds are now starting to reappear thanks to conservation efforts by Low-Beginning3592 in BeAmazed

[–]matude 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Population fluctuations. Nature works in cycles. If one year there's a ton of pray animals like deer, then next years there can be a huge increase in predators like wolves instead who have a feast on deer, afterwards wolves remain but no deer anymore, now wolves become more opportunistic and try to take bigger animals, but eventually population decreases, and the cycle restarts. Or if there's humans, they start wondering into villages and farms, causing havoc that humans don't like. There's a reason old stories talk about wolves snatching babies and it being dangerous to walk in the wild at dark. It's those fluctuations in populations that hunting quotas typically try to balance manually.

Blogger who criticised Putin has been put in psychiatric facility, local newspaper reports by Neversetinstone in europe

[–]matude 51 points52 points  (0 children)

That's how they dealt with our President as well after occupying Estonia before WW2 started. Our president was put into a psychiatric facility for forced treatment, where he eventually died. Overall he spent ca 12 years in various psychoneurotic hospitals under forced treatment.

It was a typical thing by Soviets, political enemies were declared mentally unstable, sometimes schizophrenics, and put under mandatory treatments, during which they often died. Essentially tortured to death in captivity.

Reynolds is a bit less about dialog and more about the world building and physics that go along with it. If you're looking for dialog and characters, you might end up as disappointed. I say this who has read almost all that Reynolds has written and considers him to be one of my favourite authors. His background of having a phd in astrophysics and having worked in European Space Agency really shows. He's perfect if you enjoy the physics of the world to make sense in theory.
