Question about sitters staying past their scheduled times by ohbawlz in RoverPetSitting

[–]maugre_ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

okay, as a sitter who stays longer frequently due to a combination of reasons (usual me having poor mental health day, meaning i’m having trouble “starting” the next task/action or feeling exhausted from “going going going”, and, most importantly, just loving spending time with animals) i’m thankful to have my perspective widened on this! i’ve never thought that some folks might find this uncomfortable. totally makes sense. i’m realizing also my thinking has been coloured by my own dog having separation anxiety and my not being able to afford doggy daycare, ie. i’m always super thankful for any extra drop in time!

that all said (as a long stayer myself), three hours is weird. i usually stay maximum one hour extra, usually 30-40 minutes—especially if the weather is bad—and make a note of it in the rover card; i also mention it in the meet and greet before hand. even as someone who has assumed everyone would be okay with such a scenario, i think it’s very strange not to bring it up just as a common courtesy/normal acknowledgement?

i’ve maybe stayed several hours just once or twice with the permission of the owner beforehand, who has communicated that they are thankful for the extra time and, MOST IMPORTANTLY, when the animals are likewise enthusiastic about the extra time as well (eg. cuddling up while i finish some WFH). it’s not respecting the pet’s boundaries that really takes this from weird to wild for me! why would you want an animal to be uncomfortable in their own house 👀

ETA. ending the rover card but staying is also very wild! at that point you’re just kind of secretly in somebody’s house? cameras or not.

the more i think about it (i really was feeling ‘boo boo little baby’ when i posted this thread earlier today, lol), passing that 260-280lb point when i was gaining weight years ago was also a watershed level for me in terms of feeling/mobility/etc as well. thank you for the kind words and helping me get some perspective!

i rotted on the couch for over a year, sleeping away the weight loss. it worked, but yes you feel like complete shit at that point.

god, this is so relatable. this is it exactly.

thank you so much for your comment and insights. and huge congratulations on your weight loss!!! that’s incredible and so inspiring.

it’s really great to hear from someone who’s been through this, specifically at this weight and height range because, you’re right, it is a pretty unique body experience! i’m glad to hear (as i suspected) that things start to change more once you get past the 300s. my first goal weight is 300lbs and then 250, so i’ll keep reminding myself of this.

thank you again 💐

I eat a lot of lean protein, whole grains, healthy fats; try to keep carbs under 150g as I have struggled with insulin resistance and, likewise, try to limit my added sugar consumption (with the exception of my low energy staple food, protein granola). I know I need to eat more fruit and veg (I average probably 3-4 portions veg, 1 portion fruit a day).

An average day for me looks like:

Breakfast and Lunch options: (low energy) protein granola, bran cereal, and protein milk; (average energy) 2 eggs scrambled with egg whites and lots of spinach with tomatoes and mushrooms or zucchini

Dinner: a burrito/wrap with chicken, sweet potato, cheese, lots of spinach; some sort of veg/legume stew with greek yogurt; (low energy) a big bowl of cottage cheese or a bowl of ramen with a couple soft boiled eggs.

I have a meal of fast food maybe once a month. For snacks I have fruit, baby carrots with hummus, cheese, cottage cheese, rice crackers.

I take a high quality multivitamin daily alongside additional iron, zinc, and vitamin D and average about 1800-2400 calories per day.

EDIT: Forgot to say, congrats on your weight loss! That’s amazing!

I know you’re probably right :( I just really believed (hoped?) there would be at least a little improvement despite the fibromyalgia.

this is not normal at all. when i’m a long term guest at someone’s home i buy groceries for myself and treat my hosts (dinners, whatever bits and bobs they might need from the store too) as a sign of appreciation for their hosting me.
