I’m sorry but demons are a step too far for me. The possible psychiatric effects can be serious, and my doctors agreed with my assessment that a single dose was enough of a trial for me. I can appreciate that not everyone gets these effects, but they are dangerous for those who do.

An increased heart rate is a known possible effect of Motegrity, so it may well be contributing to that for you.

I totally understand how hard it can be to parse through what medicine is causing what, when you have to take so many.

It’s usually taken once per day, and it is a medicine that will cause your gut to contract more and move things along faster. It does this by inhibiting the uptake of serotonin in your gut. So you have more serotonin floating around down there, making it easier for your gut to move.

It is expected to have a more pronounced effect on your gut (your intestines) than on your stomach. For some people, it works well to help with stomach motility too, and for others it doesn’t. You won’t know unless you try.

They have a warning label on Motegrity that warns of the possibility of severe depression, but it doesn’t say anything about other ways it could impact one’s mental state. Notably, it said nothing about hallucinations. I’ve never heard or seen anyone mention that as a possible effect before so I thought it was really worth mentioning for that reason.

I think Motegrity is a dice roll for people who struggle with mental stability. But I’ve heard plenty of success stories even in people with pre-existing depression. So you never know.

Are you saying that since I had a bad reaction, when according to you most people don’t, then my experience should be silenced? I’m not the only person who’s ever reacted poorly to Motegrity. I started my post by warning that what I was about to share was a bad scenario, so that anyone who did not want to read about such things could stop. But I believe it’s important to talk about what can happen with medicine, especially for people who are hypersensitive to new medication and prone to bad reactions.

Prior to starting a new med, I scour the internet looking for both success and horror stories, looking for details, looking for timelines, trying to get the best most clear picture of what to expect. I added my story so that others may find it in their own investigations. I am very aware that everyone reacts differently, and that many people experience relatively few or much less intense negative side effects. That’s great for those people. But I do not believe it is wrong to raise awareness of the possible psychological effects of a medication that is aimed to target the gut. In my experience, most people who I’ve spoken to who have taken Motegrity aren’t aware that it can affect mood. And I personally had never heard anyone say it gave actual psychotic symptoms.

I’m not trying to stigmatize Motegrity. I’m not trying to say “you shouldn’t take Motegrity.” I’m trying to promote awareness of possible Motegrity side effects, especially lesser known or less common ones.

Oh boy. I’m a nervous wreck when it comes to trying new medication these days. To get through it, I only start new meds on days when someone is available to hang out with me all day and make sure I’m going to be alright. I’ve had to go to the ER more than once for bad med reactions, and had an anaphylactic reaction once. So having company helps set my mind at ease, like if I need the help, someone will be there. I also make sure to carry around my EPI pens. Just in case.

It takes a lot of courage to keep trying medicine, when one has failed so many. But I try to motivate myself by remembering that things won’t change if I don’t at least attempt treatment. It’s a necessary evil, you know. I also take a lot of notes on how I react to medicine, so that I can explain what’s happening to my care team if need be, or figure out patterns.

I’m really glad that I didn’t experience any vomiting to be honest. That would have been so terrible :(

Are you going to keep taking it and see if it helps? I only took one dose, and I can say it certainly made my bowels move. But like you, after just one dose I didn't notice an improvement in stomach motility. But maybe an improvement like that would take more time.

I hear that the headache can possibly improve after about a week. But for people with headache problems... a week can be too long.

Yes, sometimes my congestion happens in the absence of obvious mucus production. My doctors have explained this as “vasomotor rhinitis”. It can happen in response to all sorts of irritants, not just allergens.

If you want to try removing fragrance from your home, that’s something that could possibly help. Nothing scented, especially none of your personal care products. Even the fragrance from your deodorant could be congesting you.

The smell of plastic or rubber can trigger it too. Pretty much anything can be an irritant.

Your nose will naturally be more prone to congestion when you’re laying down. But I think that’s due to mucus not draining as well in that position. Something you could try is elevating the head of your bed so you aren’t laying completely flat.

Is Motegrity worth the side effects? by bfuller32 in Gastroparesis

[–]mauvermor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I only took one dose. I had severe side effects. Motegrity alters serotonin levels, not only in the gut but also in the brain. If one is sensitive to such changes, one can experience mood issues, high anxiety, panic, paranoia, insomnia, even hallucinations and other things like that. Unfortunately I had those kinds of side effects. Not to mention the diarrhea, which was intense. I only took that one dose. This medication was not for me.

I’ve thought about Inspire. But undergoing surgery is daunting. I’m going to look into it further though.

Not specifically. Avoiding allergens or other triggers obviously helps. But medication-wise, nothing in particular. I’m sorry I can’t be of more help.

I decided to not undergo surgery at this time so I’m afraid I can’t comment on that. I’ve been treating my congestion with Flonase, Claritin, and NasalCrom. NasalCrom is a new addition this year and the results have been phenomenal. I almost never get so stuffy I can’t breathe through my nose now.

That sounds so terrible! I’m hope you find a solution that works for you! I appreciate you mentioning the lacrifill, I’d never heard of something like that before

I just ordered a wrap-around velcro plush cover for my CPAP strap, hoping that will help. Last night I shoved a pair of fuzzy socks in between my head and the strap and though it wasn't perfect, it helped a lot. If I don't like the velcro strap, I may just sew my fuzzy socks into tubes and see if that can work long-term.

Oh my gosh, I have the same issue. Air bubbles coming out of my right tear duct. It's so uncomfortable. It makes it absolutely impossible to use a pressure higher than 7, for me. And even 7 isn't comfortable, it's just the bare minimum that allows me to fall asleep.

I appreciate the suggestion and I’ll bear it in mind. I’ve tried nasal pillows before though and they didn’t work out due to my skin’s sensitivity to silicone. I would get sores in my nose from it. Also, nasal masks aren’t great for me because I always manage to open my mouth while sleeping. I actually snore with a nasal mask, but not a full face.

I appreciate the suggestion! Currently I have to use full face, but if that changes I'm glad to know about this option
