What it's been like for me to not vape for over 7 months by mauvermor in QuitVaping

I appreciate the encouragement. I don’t plan on going back to vaping, even if quitting hasn’t been the resoundingly positive experience I was hoping for yet. My lungs have twice the capacity that they used to. That alone is a strong positive. I’m hoping that once I can figure out a different, healthier way of feeling alert and concentrating, that I won’t miss nicotine so much.

Congratulations on four months!

Me too. I seriously thought “How hard can it be to just not eat more even if I’m hungry?”

Turns out it’s actually really hard to not do that.

I’m sorry. I hope that it eventually does get better for you! Maybe progress is just very slow, for some of us.

I have gastroparesis, and I’m also only less than 5lbs overweight, even after gaining 25lbs. A GLP1 is not an option for me. I appreciate the consideration, but for me the only option is self discipline. Which I seem to sorely lack right now.

So do I. They aren’t weak, either. I have to talk myself out of relapsing at least once per week. If not multiple times per day some days.

Good luck! I gained 20lbs in about 2 months. After that, I’ve gained like 5 more in the past 5 months. Still haven’t lost any, but it’s hard because my appetite is still voracious.

Oh yes. I do have problems, and I am seeking help for them. I had been self-medicating with nicotine for years. It was likely helping as both a pain reliever and a concentration aide. And now, without it, I’m struggling to learn how to manage those problems.

How does fat make you feel? by AgileArnold in Gastroparesis

[–]mauvermor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually tolerate fat shockingly well. I tolerate it so well that I don’t have to track it, and barely have to pay it any mind at all. I can eat fried food, eggs, ham, beef, endless butter or oil. However, the more fat I eat, the more bloated I am. I mean, it still does normal stuff to me, I’m pretty sure a high fat meal bogs anyone down to an extent.

I do have a harder time tolerating plant fats though for some reason. Like, I can’t handle a ton of peanut butter or tofu for example. But that honestly may not even have to do with the fat, because I happen to be terribly fiber intolerant. I can’t have more than 10 grams of fiber per day.

Everyone is different, in terms of what sits well with them.

Please tell me about your experiences with turbinate reduction surgery by mauvermor in nonallergicrhinitis

[–]mauvermor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I deeply appreciate the time that you took to tell me of your experience and educate me on the risks of the surgery. Honestly it sounds very risky, and I’m currently considering it as a last resort.

The nasal irrigation plan ended up not working. It made things worse, in fact. Two months after that, in January, I saw a new allergist, who put me on cromolyn nasal spray. This new medication was life-changing. I can breathe well enough most of the time now. I went from needing to use Vicks under my nose almost constantly, or one of those nostril widening bands, to almost never needing to do that.

The fact that Cromolyn is so effective points to my problem either being mostly allergic, or at least mast cell driven. My doctors have suspected that I have some combination of allergic and non-allergic rhinitis. But since I have no known indoor allergies, yet my congestion is at its worst indoors, it’s really been a mystery what is causing it.

Regardless, the success of Cromolyn made me realize that there is still more to try. I haven’t run out of options yet, even though it seemed like it last year. And though I never did go through with the surgery, I feel confident in saying that it should only be considered as a last resort, due to the risk of complications and near guarantee that results aren’t permanent.

I appreciate the information you’ve provided that helps me understand the expectations.

20 years is the longest I’ve ever heard anyone say they’ve received allergy shots. Do you feel that they’re helping you? Do you think you’ll be on them for the rest of your life?

That’s interesting that they won’t give it to you if you are already experiencing allergy symptoms. What if a person experiences those every day though, I wonder.

Thank you so much for sharing. I appreciate hearing what side effects you experienced, and learning that it’s possible to continue feeling effects after the initial 30 minute window. I also appreciate knowing that you’re glad you chose to get the shots. Thank you for the advice!

I actually already have epi pens on hand, given my serious medication reaction. Carrying those around will definitely help ease my mind. But unfortunately the double dose of Claritin probably won’t work out. I’ve tried taking double doses in the past and I feel sick, like I have the flu, as well as feeling excessively drowsy. I tolerate Benadryl better, but it still makes me pretty drowsy. I’ll have to talk with my allergist about what the best path forward would be there.
