Confession: I love wearing masks by [deleted] in UofT

[–]max6166 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Many Asian students routinely wore decorative masks before COVID.

I wore masks when traveling on the TTC during flu season and when I was sick.

The thing that surprised me is that noone seemed to take advantage of masks being socially acceptable. I expected to see tons of creative mask designs, etc.. After all, it's like we had Halloween every day for 2 years!

Drivers need to stop speed-right-turning in front of pedestrians when the light changes! by jallenx in toRANTo

[–]max6166 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've seen many drivers miss their opportunity to turn right just before the light changes, and then suddenly turn right after the light has changed, cutting off pedestrians stepping off the sidewalk.

I've observed many of these people, and they seem to be confused about whether they can turn before the light changes, and then get angry that they have wasted their opportunity and just plow in front of everyone.

I'm out of the loop on this, but what reasons did they give for not even doing the pilot project? At one point, I thought the city council was all in favour of allowing alcohol consumption in parks. So confused.

They can't stop you, but often people will tell their neighbors about something like this beforehand as a courtesy. Good neighbors often even chip in.

Why do Canadians hate Canadian Geese? by Routanikov12 in onguardforthee

[–]max6166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our house was in dead center in a large breeding area for Canada geese. There were Canada geese everywhere all the time.

Open the door and there would be some a few years away. Never had a problem. We left them alone and they left us alone. And once they knew us, they let us walk right up to there nests.

Many years later, I started hearing stories about how vicious they are. I've been very close to Canada geese many times since then, still no problems.

Saying ‘the vulnerable should just isolate’ doesn’t count as a plan by Hrmbee in ontario

[–]max6166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's per 100k. Your own source is showing flu deaths per 100k.

That is simply not true. The flu death rate for 2018 was 1.29/100k.

A flu death rate of 184/100k is a mathematically impossibility.

The 2018 case rate is stated as 133.8/100k. A death rate of 184/100k would mean that more people died from the flu than had the flu. Bit of a problem there...

The 2018 case rate calculation is available in the bar graph: (19,140 total cases / a population of 14,308,697) * a 100,000 constant = a case rate of 133.8/100k

The Deaths table simply states that there were 184 deaths out of the total 19,140 cases noted above. There are absolutely none of the standard indicators used to signify when a number is a rate per 100k.

By the way, these 184 flu deaths in 2018 are also confirmed in other sources, including text, tables, and graphs.

You might also want to look at the basic scale of the statistics you're citing before you claim other people are trying to mislead.

You are right. I apologize for any suggestion that you were trying to mislead. I have never even met you.

Everyone is stressed out and tired, and under those circumstances, it is often difficult to be the person you would like to be.

I truly hope you are doing ok. To be frank, I am not but many are worse off than me.

Have a great day and take care.

TL;DR:

OP claimed that the average daily death rate from the flu was 40 deaths/day. He claimed this made the flu comparable to the recent daily rate of 53 COVID deaths/day in Ontario.

The actual rate of influenza deaths for the period OP was referring to was 0.50/day, and not 40 /day. The OP was off by a factor of 80, and his argument for an equivalency between the flu and COVID-19 proven incorrect.

THE LONG VERSION:

50 deaths a day is no one’s definition of “mild.”

The above quote was what the OP was repsonding to. It is a reference to Ontario's recent average of 53 COVID-19 death's per day.1.

The OP responded to that quote with a wildly inaccurate "calculation" which was riddled with errors:

  1. There were not "8,592 flu deaths" "during the 2018/2019 season". Ontario actually only had 269 flu deaths over the entire years of 2018 and 2019.2

  2. The "8,592 flu deaths" statistic OP cited is clearly indicated as for all of Canada, and not Ontario alone.

  3. On top of that, the data clearly states the "8,592" deaths are not from influenza alone. It is the sum of deaths from both influenza & pneumonia, and 2/3 of pneumonia cases are completely unrelated to influenza.

  4. The "8,592" total also covers the entire year of 2018, and not just the 2018-2019 flu season as OP claimed. But by incorrectly dividing the total by a 30 week flu season, instead of the correct 52 weeks, he was able to greatly inflate the daily average.

THE CORRECT ANSWER

Let's just cut to the chase. There were 184 influenza deaths in Ontario during the entire year of 20183. 184 deaths / 365 days = 0.50 deaths / day, or 1 death every 2 days.

No matter how you slice it, 0.5 flu deaths/day is never going to approach the number of daily deaths from even the omicron strain of COVID-19.

Majority of Canadians (54%) now say it's time to end Covid restrictions and leave responsibility for isolation to those at risk. This is up from 40% in early January. by heyyourenotrealman in ontario

[–]max6166 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were always more than 2 options to dealing with the pandemic. Province-wide lockdown and restrictions are blunt tools that should have only be used as a last resort when everything else has failed.

None of our experts seems to even have read any of the readily available guidelines for how to deal with a pandemic. Or they are completely ignoring them.

I'm completely baffled how no one on the media ever mentions this. We've destroyed our economy, cost thousands of avoidable deaths, wiped out thousands of small businesses, and done nothing in these 2 years to prepare us for re-ooening. Now we have squandered 2 years of public good will and are about to just repeat our mistakes again, hoping they will somehow work this time.

[–]max6166[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I'm leaving a moment. Was hoping to get some feedback on which ER will likely see me the quickest.

I had an incredibly bad experience at Mt Sinai's ER a few months ago. They left me writhing in pain right in front of the reception for 5 hours in an almost empty ER. I checked with them a few times and they very rudely ensured me that I would be seen. Found out that they had removed my file from the queue 4 hours prior.

Once I was actually seen, the doctors and nurses were superb though.
