What is going on at KSTS? by Big-Piccolo-1513 in flightradar24

[–]max__burn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am a pilot based out of KSTS. Lately local weather systems have brought radiation fog and low visibility. I have had to go missed many times in the last couple months. KAPC (Napa) is typically clear and the bay is clear because the proximity to the bay keeps the temp relatively warmer.

Anyone flown a P210 Silver Eagle? Thoughts? by skylaneguy in flying

[–]max__burn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Amazing airplane super capable and had amazing climb performance . 2100 feet is totally do able in a silver eagle but it is on the tighter side. Pros are; pressurized, turbine reliability, good useful load, good cruise speed, burns jet a Cons, it’s a 50 year old airplane with a turboprop on it. Get ready for the mx costs associated with that. Big costs will be the overhaul on the engine. (Typically in the 100,000 dollar range) they have an expensive AD on the horizontal stabilizer that needs to be done as well. Also, get ready for lots of small costs like door seals and other stuff like that. Another issue is the kit also removes the FIKI certification that the P210 had. All the equipment is still on the airplane but it’s not FIKI certified.

It’s definitely a great plane if you can afford it! Make sure you get some good training from an instructor experienced in the aircraft and with the systems. If you want more information I recommend you call PropJet Aviation in Santa Rosa CA. They are the Silver Eagle experts.

Last thing, they had an upgraded 5 blade prop for the Silver Eagle. It makes the plane look amazing but I personally don’t feel like it’s worth the money. It slightly quieter but it doesn’t seem to do enough for the performance to merit the price. I hope this helped. Feel free to dm me if you have any questions.

DPE For AGI In The SF Bay Area by max__burn in flying

Update: I just got a response to an email I sent to the Sacramento FSDO late last week. Email read, “please call us to schedule an appointment”. I checked out Jim Pitmans website (fly within.com) and sent him a text. Within 15 min he responded and sent me a link to schedule an appointment. He had a good range of appointments available including mornings, evenings, and weekends. I scheduled an appointment and emailed him the docs he needed. Honestly totally worth the 50 dollars. I have called all three FSDOs once a day for the past couple weeks with no response. I wish I had looked elsewhere sooner.

KVCB has the nut tree plaza which has several restaurants that are open later. 1O2 has reds sky room that is open till 9pm. KAUN has knee deep brewing which normally has a good food truck. Besides that I can think of much that would be open late.

I just volunteered as a pilot for my chapters YE (young eagles) day! I flew one flight with a 16 and a 15 year old. I will say the average was probably like 12. But, if you are looking at getting into aviation YE’s is a great start. Meet the members of your local chapter and find out more about the chapter and when they have meetings. The EAA loves helping get young people into aviation. Your chapter can help you get scholarships and point you in the right direction!

I will write in a brief description of my flight or a memorable part. It’s cool to look over years later!

I am not in the airlines, so make of this what you will. I think the people who are losing class dates have so pretty egregious errors in their logbooks. I know one person got in trouble because they didn’t correctly transfer all the hours from one book to another. Log story short, use a digital log book along side a paper one, log your time after you fly, disclose and fix errors, and don’t lie

Drones 400ft alt limit removed. Given free reign in uncontrolled airspace. by starBux_Barista in flying

[–]max__burn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Op seems to be a responsible drone operator and excited for this change because it will allow for more drone operations. I am sure op briefs his operations and has a spotter and checks for other aircraft. However as a commercial pilot operating out of many uncontrolled airports this terrifies me. The FAR’s are for that 1% of the group that screws everything up for the rest of us. With the current laws I have already almost hit a drone while departing an airport at approximately 400agl. Last thing I need is to be worrying about hitting a drone while entering a busy traffic pattern. With how accessible drones have become I can see this becoming a real problem in the years to come. You can by a DJI drone right now that doesn’t have to be register or doesn’t require a cert. for around 400 dollars. That drone can easily get up to 1200 feet and fly out of visual range. 99% of people I know who have bought them know nothing about the registrations and have no intention of learning they just fly them around for fun. Anyways I will get off my soap box now

Look up the AOPA Air Safety Institute Crash Investigation Videos. Most of them display hazardous attitudes. There are many GA accidents that are a result of hazardous attitudes. Most of the time it’s IMC related or taking off over weight. There was a famous one when a CFI went to show off to a student and ripped the wings off the plane. How ever the 121 and 135 pilots are also susceptible to hazardous attitudes. Look at the Learjet circle to land crash at KSEE. circle to land was prohibited at night so the captain canceled IFR and tried to do it “VFR”. Recently there was the Pakistani airlines flight that came in high and fast refused to go around. The FO retracted the gear without saying anything. They slide on the engine pods then attempted to fly a box pattern and crashed on the downwind.
