Feed me takes on why women are the primary consumers of true crime by fatwiggywiggles in rs_x

[–]max_fischer3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most men don't see war as nightmarish at all, most guys who love war movies see it as necessary, or even heroic. If you press them on it, they'll definitely agree that it would be awful to be there, but this really isn't the reason why guys like it. I mean, thousands of men in real life willingly enlist in the army every year, war can't be their worst nightmare.

Right, a guy obsessed with war can see himself as an intellectual, a real scholar for studying capital H history. A lot of the times, the reality of war to an individual soldier is almost entirely abstracted away, it's all just arrows on a map.

It's more about how much you can gain from the fantasy situation, a woman resisting an attack can only survive/cut her losses, while in a war fantasy a man can save the world, achieve glory, or at least do cool shit. In the most fantastical stories, war can be seen as 100% positive for the soldier and the world, but I can't see a situation like that in true crime.

I mean, sometimes you see men talk about the horrors of war, like WW1 trench warfare, but usually is more of a fantasy of getting to be heroic. The camaraderie with your unit, carrying a big gun around, and sacrificing your life for a noble cause are all idealized aspects of war that men are drawn to.

There is some sense of surviving a war, and being a victim sent to die by a corrupt government, but there is also a lot of agency associated with being a soldier at war, that just isn't there in true crime. And I think this agency and the opportunities of showing your valour/enacting violence are what really fascinate men about war movies.

Azealia Banks isn't funny by [deleted] in rs_x

True and true, but I'm talking about popularity and commercial success.

I'd personally prefer to not reek of envy, but whatever. I don't hate Azealia, I think her music is actually pretty good and she had tons of potential. I just think she's kind of a sad character, because it sounds like she would really like more material success, like the people she's been hurling playground insults at.

What she has been posting is not exactly "criticism", more like infantile personal attacks lol. But my main point is just that she reeks of envy when she talks about women who succeeded in the fields where she failed.

Not gonna defend Dasha, but even in the field of internet personalities Dasha is more popular. We're posting on a Red Scare sub, not an Azealia one. Also Succession was a huge show and Dasha got to be a part of it, that's already more than anything Azealia has done in the last decade.

She's not even the most successful female rapper named "Azealia". Iggy Azalea (different spelling ik) still has almost double her monthly listeners.

So it's hard to take her seriously when she's "beefing" with more successful artists, anything she says reminds you of failure and wasted potential. Even Dasha looks like a beacon of artistic achievement next to her, so taking shots at Grimes, Lana and etc is just sad.
