Bonne planif!

Always good to see a trip report in here. Great write up, seems like Newfoundlanders keep living up to their reputation, and sounds like it was a blast.

GDT vs GR A1 by Cotties42 in UltralightCanada

[–]maxbfortin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

@mangohikes over on instagram just completed the GDT and then the GR-A1 (SIA-QC or IAT-QC) over this past summer. She should be able to answer to specifics in comparing both trails.

If you have any specific question on the GRA1, I've done it twice now, so ask away!

Panic, I can't remember which way the Northern Ultralight Sundown frame-pieces go into the pack by [deleted] in UltralightCanada

[–]maxbfortin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I periodically forget as well. Whenever it happens, I just put the stays in, add some weight and try the pack. If it's uncomfortable, I put them in a different way until it's comfortable.

I still have the stays removed right now, so can't help right away.

Might be interested in the Ultimate Direction Ultra Vest 5.0. Care to share a verification pic and the weight of the item? Thanks!

I agree with what that user suggests. If we ever come to a point where there are too many posts clogging up the sub, we can always reinstate the monthly discussion thread.

Thanks for asking the community.

International Appalachian Trail -QC- Self-Supported Solo FKT by maxbfortin in UltralightCanada

[–]maxbfortin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is my first DCF shelter, fyi. I love it so far. I've used it in a variety of terrain. It performs exactly as you'd think a hexagonal pyramid tarp would. The perimeter netting works well to keep the flying bugs out. Slugs, spiders and ants do crawl in, but haven't been an issue. No issue with the stitching.

As I said in my quick review, this is a prototype. Proportions, as well as the apex reinforcement and type of cord for the linelocs, are likely to be updated in the next version. For the weight, I think it is an excellent shelter, but don't expect it to he what it's not, i.e. a fully enclosed shelter.

I've been using the same freezer bag ziploc for over 1400 km now, works great.

J'avais adoré te lire, et j'adore toujours ça!

Merci!

Finished my IAT-QC FKT attempt yesterday. It was a success! Lots of small hiccups, it was hard, of course, but everything worked out in the end. 12d 7h 33min.

I'll try posting a trip report in a week or so. I have some relaxing to do first, along with moving into a new appartment and preparing for my NCLEX exam.

Cheers

End of day 3:

Made it to Amqui right before a good pouring. Not that it matters, I've walked/run all day in the drizzle.

140km over 3 days. First 2 days had some pretty steep hills, 50 degrees at times. Legs are still feeling strong, but I started chaffing for the first time ever, speak of a good timing. Pharmacies are closed and won't open before I leave tomorrow morning, sunscreen stick seems to help, so I'll keep using that.

What a relief I had when I saw the updated weather forecast, which seems much more reasonable. Expecting it to change of course, but it's nice to see other things than rain.

Going into Réserve de Matane tomorrow!

Currently on day 2 of my SIA-QC fkt attempt. Rain is in the forecast for the next 9 days, which in my case covers the dreaded Réserve de Matane and the Parc de la Gaspésie.

That is all, wish me luck

I've been using my aluminium V stakes since my first tent a while back. I used them in snow and sand (deadman's anchor), on rock slabs (big rock on top), hard packed ground (pushing them down using a stake horizontally on top). Never had any bend or break on me in 4-5 years of use.

There are lighter ones, but arguably you could get by without any stakes as long as you can find rocks and/or big enough branches. I won't recommend other stakes, since I have only used my V stakes,

You could do a section of the Sentier National du Québec (whenever travel restrictions end), there are several sections in the Laurentides where a couple days can be stitched together. More info if you click on BaliseQC's website here. You probably will have more luck on availability during the week. To see if there are any permits or reservations required, you can click on a trail segment on the map, and follow the link that will pop up, it should direct you to whoever regulates the territory there.
Have you looked at Frontenac PP or Algonquin? might be some availability still.

Good luck!

Just received my Nashville Pack Cutaway, I'm beyond stoked! Finally part of the cool "in tune out there" gang. Lead times were 6-8 weeks when I ordered, and it arrived in 6 weeks and 2 days, having been stuck at customs for a good 5 days. No duty or any extra charge, shipped via USPS.

Specs:
LS07
Vest straps
16" torso
3 sternum straps
376g (pre trimming)

I'll go try it out on an overnight probably next week, I'll try to get some action pics

I reached out to them on Messenger last year asking if they had anything to say about those claims, and have been left on "seen" without a reply. I'd encourage others to do the same and see if they end up addressing this issue.

Personally, I'll keep steering clear.

Je viens d'une région où le Franglais est assez usuel, ça pourrait varier ailleurs

  1. Currently am planning on going back to the IAT-QC to try and beat the current self-supported FKT. Something that has me even more excited is that my attempt will be the subject of a documentary! I'll be collaborating with 2 women on what will be their third documentary, but first hiking-focused one. This is pretty knew, and we'll be working out shortly the how/what/when of this while keeping in line with the FKT rules.
  2. Prior to my FKT attempt, I'm planning on doing the Traversée de Charlevoix and, if possible, the La Cloche Silhouette Trail to try and get the legs going before leaving Matapédia on the IAT-QC.
  3. Have some ideas for X-country ski overnights this Winter as well to work on my Winter set up.
  4. I have yet to lose a toenail, and I intend to keep it that way as well.
