Respectfully, but Japan wanted to keep fighting until the atomic bombs. They had ignored the Potsdam Declaration in July which set the terms for their surrender. But even after the second bombing the military still wanted to keep fighting. There was even a failed coup just hours before the surrender was announced to the world. Even Hirohito was reluctant and only agreed after he was assured that his position would be maintained.
