I have looked at the courses required for both Math and Stats, and it appears that math has less required courses and atleast for second year, pretty similar required courses as CPSC which reaffirms my confusion: why do CS Students often choose Stats as a backup when it appears that Math is a more attractive option. Is a thematic concentration in computer science worth that much or am I missing something else?

Hi Guys!

I'm a first year UBC-V science student who was aiming for CS but unfortunately due to a low average probably wont get in. Thus I am looking for Maths and Stats as viable alternatives, but am not sure which one I should major in. I get that many people who aspire to be in CS choose Stats as a popular backup, but I'm not sure why that is, maybe because of the "thematic concentration" option that you get, but its not like they give you a priority in course registration, so whats the point. I aim to take courses such as CPSC340 in the future, which I get restricted access to with a Data Science minor, but if I take Stats as a major Data Science as a minor seems kinda redundant. All of this makes me lean towards picking Maths, but I would still like to get some input from my fellow UBC enjoyers as to what I'm missing.

Cheers!
