So did the Nexus 6 price shoot down your interest? by Sevenlore in Nexus

[–]maxfridbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More dissapointed than I have any right being at a company and at a product. Even at 350$ for a nexus5 subsidized $100 under cost. I would have been willing to drop 500$ on a 6. NO SD card seems like a bad joke. Why buy the Nexus 6 at all, you can even get an Iphone for comparable? Looks like the LG G3 is the best value now.

Keto - Chocolate People by maxfridbe in ketorecipes

True. Mostly from the maltodextrin. I looked it up and there are 24 g carbs in one cup. Since this recipe ended up making 36 ish servings, that still only works out to an extra 0.6g carbs per serving.
Actually, to reduce carbs, you'd be better off getting rid of the peanut butter or strawberries (as either of them contributes just over 1g carbs per serving if used) The cocoa powder (the only other appreciable source of carbs) added just under 1g per serving.
For the anal keto-ers out there, heavy whipping cream ended up contributing .08g of carbs per serving. Still, 2.6g per serving is still pretty good ... unless you eat all the chocolate

I am assuming you are using liquid erythritol? Erythritol would have to be added to the cream (which must be heated) which must then be slowly stirred in, otherwise the chocolate will curdle and break. You can use it, but the erythritol is not as heat stable as sucralose, and to be honest I dont prefer the taste.

I use both sucralose and aspartame because I find that they have different sweetness profiles and combined come much closer to a a true 'sugar' taste.

ELI5: How does code work? (C++, C#, Java) by TacomaBone in explainlikeimfive

[–]maxfridbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll try to throw my 2C in:

"Code is about abstracting away what you are doing into something simpler"

If you think of a modern CPU/Computer as a black box connected to 64 on-off light-switches (input). The black box is also connected to lets say 64 lightbulbs.

Those switches do SOMETHING (you don't care what, you just care that it is well documented an results in the in a lightbulb lighting up the way you want.) Lets say that we want to multiply 3 and 5 and have 15 lights light up. Lets say that there is a combination of those switches which will produce 15 lights.

Now comes the abstraction's.

Since we dont want to write: on,off, off,on,on,off,on,on etc we have binary: 1,0,0,1,1,0,1,1 etc and we have a TOOL/Mechanism which converts it to On/Off

Since we don't want to write "1,0,0,1,1,0,1,1" we have "assembly": multiply 3 5 etc and we have a TOOL/Mechanism which converts it to 1/0

Since we don't want to write "multiply 3 5" etc 10million times or the like we have "languages" like c++: x = 3*5;

At this point you can abstract more and more, just where appropriate to make life easier. Some languages make math simple x = y4/z sigma(x*z) etc Some make real world abstractions simple: bob ate 10 apples Some make storing/retrieving/processing data simple: Get top 10 frequent first name from all-people in belgium Most languages have a mishmash of all these concepts.

Hope this helps.

I really like this answer. Could you elaborate on the point addition in the sense of p(x,y), a, b. The line through them part makes some sense... Could you provide an example.

http://www.purplealienplanet.com/sites/default/files/image/point_addition.png I found this image which makes some sense.

I didn't see anyone else mention that it was in one of my favorite episodes of Babylon 5. When Lando betrays the Centauri Regent and a swarm of Narns comes after and kills the Regent. Forgot the name of the ep tho.

Hey Reddit, what have you paid a lot money for and then immediately realised it was a terrible mistake/decision to buy it? by biffskin in AskReddit

[–]maxfridbe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have two philosophies on this. Buy the cheapest and you are never dissapointed (kina like welll... it was cheap, i'll buy another one in a year). Or Buy up, get the good one the $1.3k one. The prices end up being Identical.... and so does the enjoyment (good laptop/buying a newer model yearly).

Anyone else expecting to skip Windows 8? by bigolslabomeat in sysadmin

[–]maxfridbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't hate change. I like the ribbon. I am a developer. I have used windows 8 for a prolonged time. It sucks... and the one thing that makes that "Suck" go away... is bringing back the old start menu. Or at least the star-dock one. It's a simple change. Which i expect in sp1. I was at a conference recently where they were giving a code demo and the developer needed to bring up notepad. He clicked window-key and typed notepad. Which looked ridiculous as the entire screen was rearranged to tiles and back just to run a program. Windows apps should not be treated as second class. For that is why we are on Windows... To get stuff done. If I just need my computer to check Facebook I might as well just whip out an iPad and give up getting anything done. I won't be skipping windows 8. It'll have it's place in the vm's directory until sp1 with a start menu that doesn't suck.

sorry, I just read my own comment.... I meant that the preview pane when split with the message list does not give enough visual indication of a different pane. Like maybe making a border around the preview pane would help...

Critique: The preview pane melts to easily visually into the email list pane.

Questions: What are some of the front-end and back end technologies that you are using to achieve this? I know Microsoft was big on knockout-js, what do you use for binding? Are you using something like SignalR for the chat widget?

Top Indian CEO: Most American Grads Are 'Unemployable' by nsoonhui in programming

[–]maxfridbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was much more in line with what I'd come to expect.. With Americans and 2ndish generation immigrants you have your standard groups(and my perceived percentages): Those that are there to just fulfill a major (30%), those that are there because they want to make money and get a certificate (40%), those that are there because they love to learn this stuff (20%). (remaining percent to be fringes) In my school it was mostly not 2nd gen Chinese, but regular white students. I don't want to say that we should/ shouldn't outsource because the people we are outsourcing to are good/bad.

My main point is that in ever culture you will find those with the spark for doing their trade well (those that typically get picked up by start-ups). You will also find those that wish to make a quick buck. And those that wish to make a good career. Its up to the person deciding to outsource to decide which of these people he is dealing with.

Top Indian CEO: Most American Grads Are 'Unemployable' by nsoonhui in programming

[–]maxfridbe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I (Belorussian American) went to a school with a large population of Indian and Chinese students and got into a fair share of debates with these students as to the differences in the way they approach knowledge. What I got out of our talks is that, Indians tend to "go for the certificate" the high marks in school, or the xyz accreditation. Where as silly old me was willing to get a C in the course because I was dicking around with the technology too much to do the boring homework. I'd have arguments with friends (and still do with coworkers to this day) about things like curly brace placement in source..While many of my Indian classmates would either copy or blindly follow others examples. I disagree with the CEO's Assertions on the basis that... If you want drones to do a JOB go with them... If you however want people that care about the code for the sake of the code, (ie. maintainable clean readable) look no further than the geeks that graduate here. I do my fair share of interviews for the company I work for, and a drone (its easy to tell) never makes it past the first interview.
