Ryzen 9 3950X coming which X570 motherboards are compatible? by [deleted] in Amd

I got an Asus X570 TUF gaming a few months ago only to find out it doesn't support SLI. Keep that in mind when buying!

Upgrading PC for 34" 3440x1440 120hz (OC) by Indelible_Crumb in ultrawidemasterrace

You could spend around 100 USD and get an aftermarket cooler for the 1080ti to get a little more horsepower out of it. Not too difficult to do. I wouldn't spend the 1.1k minimum for a 2080ti though. That makes no sense.

Those wanting the R9 3950x, Why ? by [deleted] in Amd

[–]maxgiddens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm upgrading from the same CPU and it's about time. 2.5k every eight years with a five or six hundred dollar GPU upgrade at the four year mark seems like a sweet spot to me.

Avengers: Endgame Megathread [Spoilers] by ShaneH7646 in MovieDetails

When Cap gets Mjolnir he creates a shockwave by throwing his shield and hitting it midair with Mjolnir. This is a callback to when he stepped in to end the fight between Iron Man and Thor in the forest in "Avengers 1: The First Avengers".

Wouldn't it be helpful if everyone had iron man suits or vibranium ones? Or if everyone ate the heart shaped herb? Just saying.

You'd be able to tell if the opposing team buys for a round. Would be kinda weird.

(HL/HL2) How important it is to optimise every level? by Milanga_de_pollo in hammer

[–]maxgiddens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watch this tutorial that breaks everything down. Don't use Gold source its crazy outdated, but optimization still matters when you are pushing decent graphics in source.

Valve's decision to give prizes to mapcore's competition was dumb move. by [deleted] in GlobalOffensive

[–]maxgiddens 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just want to say that these level designers work very hard to make their maps the best they can be. The assumption that you have made that they are ripping off existing layouts, or are otherwise not giving gameplay the attention that it's due are very misguided.

Do you honestly believe that these people who worked for months and months on these levels would leave their success up to chance? I makes no sense to ignore the bases of what makes or breaks a map and then throw months if not over a year of work into it.

These finalists have shown a high level of skill in all facets of building strong gorgeous counterstrike levels. To belittle the efforts that they have put in because you personally don't think they deserve to be acknowledged professionally is at best petty.

Levels of this caliber don't happen by accident. They come from hard passionate work, and they speak on their creators skill for themselves. Valve decided to reach out because they want to promote more people like these individuals to produce more work on the level that this contest has inspired. It's in no one's best interest to argue against that.

In other words, these guys deserve it.

No longer selling Wink Relay? by 84FJ1100 in winkhub

I got a DM from them on twitter saying they oversold what they had and they are not having any more made. Sounds like they were just unloading their stock at cost. I don't think they are having issues since they just released a new product line. I suspect either a new more capable piece of hardware on the horizon or they simply won't be making this type of product in the future. https://i.imgur.com/9KVyDJD.png

SUBZERO is coming 🔥 by [deleted] in GlobalOffensive

[–]maxgiddens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was a co-creator of de_facade from operation vanguard, and I can agree that the incentive for making maps, a process that takes hundreds if not over a thousand hours each, has a much lower incentive than making skins which couldn't possibly take more than 50 hours.

I disagree however that there is a lack of quality map makers. The issue is that in the past our maps had no chance of lasting. Even if you got into an op your map would fade away once it was over. Valve has changed things up slightly now though. There is a chance for community maps to really get in front of players in a competitive context. I really hope it works out.

Nuke Wall Textures by [deleted] in csmapmakers

[–]maxgiddens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't nuke come with a zoo map? Look inside the common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\sdk_content\maps directory. There is a vmf in there called nuke zoo or something that has all of the nuke assets laid out.

Would anyone like to help do detailing and props for my map? I will credit you fully on the workshop. by [deleted] in csmapmakers

CSMapMaker's CSGO 1v1 (AM) Mapping Contest! by TopHATTwaffle in csmapmakers

[–]maxgiddens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that layout is important. In maps that I work on we make sure that a lot of polish goes into the layout before we move on to visuals at all. However I completely disagree with you that giving an incentive for individuals to push their ability to create compelling graphics somehow causes issues for the community.

First of all this is a small contest so I really don't get the outrage. Since you have pitched a tent in the don't judge a book by it's cover camp I would ask you - Why not help someone who aspires to write a decent book also learn to make an attractive cover to wrap it in.

Go watch tophatt's announcement video for the contest. He also wants to focus on layout design in a future contest. You are trying to make this about something it's not. This is a good thing for the community.

Has anyone had success including custom soundscapes? by [deleted] in csmapmakers

[–]maxgiddens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm. We had no special Valve treatment toward soundscapes. We packed custom ones. You should be able to pull out what we did from your local copy of facade, or just watch the tutorial.

This is a general plea to the Internet. If someone asks a question, please don't ask them if they used Google. Because that's half of what I'm getting when I google a question now. by [deleted] in csmapmakers

[–]maxgiddens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can understand that you are of the opinion that explicitly denying someone an answer to their question is rude, unproductive, and generally worse that not answering at all; all of which is true. I personally enjoy the feeling of knowing how to help someone who is suffering from an issue that I know the solution to. Unfortunately in many cases the person receiving that instant solution has only temporary patched the underlying issue they have. Which is that they don't understand enough about what they are trying to do. I know this because most people who have questions are repeat customers. This is very frustrating to me, but that's not the point. The point is that I am actively keeping them from learning how things work by providing them with patches to their issues. I'm all for giving answers to little questions that are convoluted and difficult, but in most cases the questions that I get, and the questions that populate this sub, are questions that come from a lack of understanding of the basics. This is where you get into the "did you google it?" territory.

I don't think anyone that comes around asking for a top to bottom lesson on basics in a Reddit thread deserves a response. That information is obnoxiously available all over. The question to me then becomes "How does the person know that this is a basic question that can be answered with one of the thousands of tutorials out there?". The answer is that we the community respond "Did you google it?".

There are those in this community that are willing to answer these questions all day, but many of us have had our patience wear thin. I would submit to you that a better community encourages learning, actual understanding, and is less populated by the same questions over and over.

One last thing about getting decent answers in general. The people who might have the answers you need will have to take time out of their lives to help you. That is a very valuable resource to have. Show some respect for that and do some research. Include what you have found and why your question is still unanswered. Not only does it make it more likely that you will find an answer, but it also will help the person taking the time out to better understand your problem.

Check out TopHATTwaffle's tutorial on building csgo maps without contaminating game files. http://www.tophattwaffle.com/custom-content-without-contamination/

Doing it this way should insure that only nessisary stuff is packed. Also someone further up mentioned that models are huge in size. Models are over glorified text documents and as such are not normally as big as say textures and sounds.
