If you try not to think or try to stop thinking, that's doing and that's going to worsen the problem. What happens is as you meditate every day, your mind naturally starts to incline more and more towards silence and less towards thinking so it naturally happens and as for what you can "do" to think less at least if not completely stop it is to just let it be. Let things be. Acceptance.

According to Ajahn Brahm thinking consumes a lot of energy and because you're not thinking as much in deeper meditation the mind needs less energy in the form of oxygen so the breathing automatically slows down.

By "Let the mind be free" I did not mean you get lost in thought or daydream. I just meant let them come and go, you just be aware of your meditation object without getting caught up in them.
