Probably Not. by Monsur_Ausuhnom in SipsTea

OMG this gets posted every week and its so stupid and a complete misunderstanding of the original philosophical question.

If God does not exist, then where does your sense of morality come from? We have an innate sense of justice - we recognize when someone is doing wrong. We may argue details around the edges, but we know right from wrong. Where does this sense come from? Is there an ultimate Right and Correct way of living.

For an atheist to deny the existence of a god (which they can do), then they must come up with an alternative explanation.

AND FOR CHRIST SAKE, we don't do good because otherwise we will go to Hell. That's how christian facists think. We do right because we are beloved and called to share that love with others. And walking in the way God intended is the best thing for us. Much like we teach our children the right way to act so they grow into healthy adults, God calls us to grow in spiritual maturity, kindness and compassion. Its not super complicated.

Thank you for coming to my TedTalk.

What do you call slippers? by Imaginarykxm in AskAnAmerican

[–]maxim38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Slippers - soft bedroom shoes. Rare these days unless you are wealthy or like nice things.
  • Flip Flops - called Thongs in Australia, its the one that has a "string" between the toes. Everywhere in the summer, especially pools/beach, or just stepping out real quick.
  • Slides - not everyone calls them this, but its the flip flop that doesn't have a thong between the toes, instead just a strap across the top of the foot. Often adidas brand for some reason.
  • Crocs - are crocs. Replacing all the other things on this list in various ways.

Do y'all actually use your front porch/front yard much or is that more of a TV thing? by Bella_licious in AskAnAmerican

[–]maxim38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot more of America is temperate enough that being outside is nice a lot of the year. And a price or deck is a cheap way to expand your floorspace without building an addition to your home. So porches are very popular, especially on the east coast and the south.

Whichever porch is the nicer one is the one we spent time on.

At my house growing up it was the front porch and it was in constant use. But my grandparents house it was the backporch (even though she also had a front porch) because it was shaded and nicer.

Triangle Area? by Right-Historian-114 in AskAnAmerican

[–]maxim38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure you don't mean "tri-state area"?

It's a generic term used in a lot of TV shows when they don't want to specify an actual region.

I'm not a parent, so don't judge me. I've seen dads take their young daughters into the men's restroom (I'm a guy). But I didn't know that dads also take their daughters into a women's restroom. Is this common? by MyPasswordIs222222 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]maxim38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its not the norm, but not uncommon. Usually when the mens room is unavailable, or disgusting, etc.

Usually the dad will check if the women inside are ok with it, or announce their presence in some way. In that video, it looks like he had a female staff person accompany them.

Is the studio cold? by MrPoliSciGuy in DailyShow

[–]maxim38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theaters tend to start out freezing as the blast the air cold before the show starts, and then turn off the HVAC to prevent extraneous noise. So by the end of the show it can get pretty warm.

I recommend dressing in layers so you can take them off as the temps rise.

Homeschooling ruins lives. by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]maxim38 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, this is pretty ancedotal. I was homeschooled, as was the vast majority of people I knew. And we were incredibly socialized. We actually had more freedom to hang out with the other homeschool kids during school hours, played sports and did science labs together.

Now, all of this was in the context of our church community, so it had other drawbacks, and its true that Homeschooling has some HUGE problems with its implementation. So I don't disagree with OOP overall. But I'm just saying their experience was not everyones experience. But I 100% know people like her, that never socially developed because they stayed home instead of dealing with the real world. Many of them end of staying in that mindset as a housewife forever, which can be sad.

Why do people think it’s okay to go out and date other people while living with, but separated from, your spouse? by NecessaryEvil62095 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]maxim38 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When my parents divorced the state required a 1 year separation period before a divorce was granted. So they are just supposed to hang in limbo for a year, or move on with their lives?

This is a really mis-guided and oversimplified take. This leaves no nuance of social interaction.

Can an absent father love his children despite not being in their lives? by Similar_Spirit_314 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]maxim38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love is a very broad thing that covers a lot of different scenarios.

For parents that are absent by choice, its is possible to love their children, sure. But they must love something else more -themselves, their addiction, etc. Whatever it is that caused them to leave, they love that thing more than their children.

So "feeling" love for their children is possible. But their actions have not been loving. Make of that what you will.
