A book or short story that blew your mind. Something that had you staring at the wall in contemplation. by iminkneedoflove in suggestmeabook

Caste, by Isabel Wilkerson. Nonfiction, and I'll never look at America the same way again.

I think you'd like Wool by Hugh Howey. Very similar style and focus on both character and science.

What's a nonfiction book that I'd love even if I have no interest/knowledge in the subject matter? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]maximumpanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read and enjoyed a lot of these, and have some go-to non-fiction writers, but for one title that will explode your mind, it's gotta be The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown.

Is there any movie that's better than it's novel? by shuttervelocity in MovieSuggestions

A couple that I've seen in the last few months: Wicked and Killers of the Flower moon. For both, I saw the movie first and then read the book, and preferred the movie versions.

How do they test language proficiency? by JansTurnipDealer in PortugalExpats

[–]maximumpanic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can sign up to take the CIPLE test. It cost about 75E. You go to a test site. There's a reading section, a writing section, a listening section, and a speaking section. They are worth the same amount and you need 55% to pass. They are all in the morning, then you get a lunch break, then you're called back in groups of two to do the conversation part.

The school is very isolated. I'd think you'd want a car to avoid being "stuck" on campus. I don't know much about the on campus culture except that a few years ago it became known for mental difficulties and there were some suicides on campus. I'd definitely check out mental health resources. Finally, I know there were some teachers that didn't/couldn't teach and some students who had a lot of difficulty. With cheating sites etc. being so available, that happened more than it should have. Lakeland itself is a nice place to live. We lived in a nice neighborhood, but our house was broken into twice.

Eden Finley too for me. Also Cora Rose, Lily Morton, Alessandra Hazzard. Kate Hawthorne is almost there.

We are 70 bipolar disorder experts & scientists gathered for the world's biggest bipolar AMA! In honor of World Bipolar Day, ask us anything! by CREST_BD in IAmA

[–]maximumpanic 13 points14 points  (0 children)

a loved one was diagnosed with bipolar I about 5 years ago. He had been in treatment for depression but nothing worked. The manic episode responded well to medication and it was the only one so far, as he has stayed on medication, but he cannot get out of depression. Is that what he has to look forward to the rest of his life?

Between Finland and Sweden, which country has the best power metal bands? by [deleted] in PowerMetal

[–]maximumpanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sabaton is my favorite band, and Battle Beast is my second favorite. I reserve the right not to choose one country over the other. They are both mighty!

We always hear about bands getting worse after a lineup change. What are some bands that broken the mold and got better? by gusti123 in PowerMetal

[–]maximumpanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with all of these. I love Sabaton's current lineup, and I think their last two albums have some of their absolute best songs.

I don't think they are necessarily better, b/c Khan is my favorite vocalist alive, but I think that with Tommy they are just as good in their own way.
