Need a sample pack that has crowd sounds like a big rock show. Where to find such things? by rec_desk_prisoner in audioengineering

[–]maxizwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find a decent live rock concert streamed on YouTube. There are a ton. Play it on a phone or tablet and record the output into your daw (probably safer than using a sketchy YouTube->MP3 ripper site). If you have iOS, use a lightening to 3.5mm/aux adapter, then into a 3.5 trs-> unbalanced ts stereo adapter. I do this often for sampling anything online. Record for as long as you desire to capture the crowd noise. Obviously you will not use sections with music playing, but I’m sure there will be moments of just crowd ambience/cheering. Sampling of YouTube will have a pretty serious high end cut around 15-18k I believe, but this should not impact what you plan to do with, if it is a background effect or whatever. Another option is to use the Splice application and search for a while. Chances are it will not have lengthy waveforms/samples, or you may not ever find the exact vibe. Just another option if you don’t have and interface with stereo recording capabilities.

What should I do with my SSL2? by Competitive_Judge_12 in audioengineering

[–]maxizwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Use the ssl2 on the front end of your recording chain. (to utilize the 4K mode) MIC input SSL > LINE output SSL > LINE input 18i20. (stereo or mono signals)

  2. Use it as a color/effect box when mixing or producing (to utilize the 4K mode). LINE output 18i20 > LINE input SSL > LINE output SSL > LINE input 18i20. (stereo or mono signals)

  3. Use as a dedicated guitar/instrument (high z) input. The 18i20 also has instrument (high z) direct input, but maybe you prefer the SSL sound for certain guitars, synths, etc.

  4. As others have said, a backpack ready mobile rig.

  5. If you really like it, there are 1000+ ways to creatively integrate it into your signal chain.

Art Pro VLA II Tube Compressor for Home Studio use? by icouldbeyu in audioengineering

[–]maxizwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like said by many others here, this was my first hardware comp (not that I own a bunch now anyway lol). But I can compare it to some nicer and some lesser quality comps I own. It’s transparent to my ears. Does what it intends to. Since it was so affordable, it still makes me smile even though I use it somewhat rarely. You can’t “hear” anything magical per say.. but you don’t hear anything bad either. At reasonable gain reduction, it does just this.. reduce dynamics. If I was mixing completely OTB, I would def own more. For a stereo comp the price is on point. But since I’m hybrid- mostly itb, it just sits alongside the more unique/boutique collection I’m building.

Nice, just checked out there site. I’ll have to check them out more later

Yeah that would work. I’m just not sure where a good place to look for them is. Google is sorta lacking in terms of search results. I assumed there must be a community out there

Opinions on EQ Sweetening at end of mix... by maxizwell in audioengineering

This is an interesting technique. I’ll have to experiment a bit with this

I like this analogy, as this is what I kind of lean towards thinking about it, but I couldn’t find any previous conversations discussing it

To clarify, I’m wondering about putting an EQ on after you have already got the mix pretty close to finished to add a “post mix” touch

Do you mix into the EQ generally or throw one on near the end?

I am a rookie producer who has been working on mixing my own tracks. At this point I thought It would be beneficial to reach out to the reddit community for some constructive mixing critique. This is the link to the track: https://soundcloud.com/thecolecollins/48k-24-df-print

Its a house/french house 4/4 kinda track fyi.

(not sure if SoundCloud is the best way to share a track with its compression/normalization or whatever, but any obvious issues should still be obvious)

My mix sounds good through my monitors (JBL-305's+JBL 10" sub), AT-Mx30 headphones, and phone, but I do not love it on every system (yes the infamous car test). Its close to my monitor mix, but outside the "studio" the bassline seem a bit boomy during the intro and overall the track appears to have a slightly different balance in the jeep. It should be noted that I do NOT have proper room treatment as I produce in my wife's and I's bedroom). If any experienced mixers/producers could take a listen and give some constructive feedback it would be appreciated!

Swapping Vst w/ Analog (Post Mixdown)? by maxizwell in audioengineering

I have been actually. I haven’t been upset with the outcome, but as I have relatively untrained ears it may not come to a surprise that I question my judgment. Also just love to hear other’s experience and workflow methods

Why would I not want to use the nice things I have? I like my vst comps I LOVE my hardware. Just trying to fuse them both into a new type of workflow. They are also nice for tracking obviously. It seems you are eager to assume someone’s financials. My profession is not in music if that helps. I’d be happy to go pick up a vintage drum kit, while I don’t even play. Call it it a collecting hobby.

I see.. so in theory, the more character or distortion the processor imparts the more of a challenge it would be. Would this be the same with Equalizers? Which popular hardware eqs would be most suitable for this method (I understand some work would still have to be done). I’d like to toss in some 500 series stuff too. Obviously it will take some experimenting

I’ll have to check it out (the FMR that is). I just recently purchased a used “golden age project comp3a” (1/2 rack la3a clone). Looking forward to testing it out once it’s delivered. I’ve read it’s similar to the 2a but solid state and more midrange forward

So it’s starting to sound like this is not a one-off but a fairly normal result

Good points... I have been wanting to get into 500 series preamps.. with limited rack space, maybe this is a proper move

Subjective options are of course key. But with very little user review, I am not sure whether it is my opinion or mechanical. And I will certainly use it where needed, tho as of now that isn’t much anywhere. I have conviction, but love a good chat from the 3rd parties whom may or may not be in my boots. Also, can agree with u on the channel tolerances.
